This version of Brahms's massive First Concerto was an instant classic when released in 1962 and recommending it now is still a no-brainer, especially in this effective remastering. Curzon gets to the heart of the music. He captures the high drama of the symphonic opening movement, and his rapt concentration makes a profound effect in the Adagio, famous for his controversially slow tempo. Szell is his equal here, conducting with passion. The way he screws up the tension in the orchestra's opening statement and then, through judicious rubato and a warming of the string tone, makes the second subject come alive is a mini-lesson in great conducting. With Boult, Curzon's Franck is on a similarly lofty plane, and the Litolff is a worthy filler.

'When we speak of Joseph Haydn,' wrote Ernst Ludwig Gerber in his Lexicon der Tonkunstler of 1790-92, 'we think of one of our greatest men: great in small things and even greater in large… Everything speaks when he sets his orchestra in motion.' Gerber was among the first to recognise 'new and surprising' traits in Haydn's output, particularly among his Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) works of the early 1770s. Espousing spontaneity and passion as sources of creativity, Sturm und Drang despised the new rationalism of the Enlightenment, offering darkness and pessimism to counterpoise its orderly logic.

The "Limp Bizkit craze" seemed to hit Europe a bit later than it did the U.S. Looking back now, the tour in support of their third album, 2000's Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water, was when you could start seeing cracks in the band's armor. Besides the fact that rap-metal was finally on its way out, this would prove to be the start of the on-again, off-again relationship between the band and guitarist Wes Borland (the only element that many took seriously in the band in the first place), resulting in the group's popularity taking a nosedive on subsequent releases. But overseas in the time frame of 2000, the Bizkit boys could still headline enormoudomes, and get the teens bobbing up and down in unison to rage and rubbery detuned guitar riffs…

The Summer Night Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic is the world's biggest annual classical open-air concert and will take place in the magical setting of the Schönbrunn Palace Baroque park in Vienna on June 18, 2021. The theme for this year is Fernweh and includes musical favorites from Bernstein, Verdi, Rachmaninov, Sibelius, Elgar, Debussy and Holst. It will also include many fantastic Summer Night Concert debuts: SNC debut by pianist Igor Levit & British conductor Daniel Harding.

Together with her Hamburg musical friends Michael Leuschner (tp), Matthias Pogoda (g), Johannes Huth (b) and Michael Verhovec (dr) Muriel Zoe has been developing the material for her ACT debut album: Red And Blue is the very individual, most entertaining and without doubt a supreme analysis by a young singer of the classics of the jazz songbook - from "Bye Bye Blackbird" through "Round Midnight" to "Autumn Leaves" - enhanced by two of her own compostions - "Lovesong No.1" and "All The Way".

English neo-prog band who mixes elements of Yes, Marillion, Genesis and Pink Floyd. Initially formed in 1989 by writing duo Mark McLeod on keyboards and Darren Newitt on guitar, the band only became a quintet in 1993 after an ad in Melody Maker and several screenings resulted in the hiring of vocalist/guitarist Sean Filkins (ex-Soma). Filkins, in turn, recommended his Soma buddy, drummer Phillip Legende who joined in; bass player Geoff Curtis completed the line-up. With its Tolkien connotation, their name is a give-away to their style as their highly melodic album "Children's Games", released in 1994, is very Genesis-like, circa "Wind and Wuthering", with vocals reminiscent of Jon Anderson's and Nick Barrett's.
