It's just good old Birth Control which we all like: lots of roaring Hammond organs, longer tracks with some hard rocking soloing mixed with simpler rock'n'roll tunes, Bernd Noske's vocals with slightly unusual accent and all the other attributes of this group created in early 70s of last century. "Alsatian" really proves that in XXI century Birth Control and its heavy prog are still alive. Compositions are much longer than in last proceeded releases, what gives opportunity for all musicians to show what they can with their instruments. They also offer very good balance of hard and soft material. The whole album is also quite long so it gives us clear impression that for sure this time heads of musicians were full of many ideas which they wanted to present it their music.

After a lengthy and successful run on RCA from 1955-1962, Lena Horne cut a few albums for the small Charter label. Picking up on the period craze for all things Latin - mambo, bossa nova, or otherwise - Horne recorded this 1963 collection of swinging, Latinized standards for the company. With husband and bandleader Lennie Hayton directing a crack group through some fine Shorty Rogers arrangements, Horne shows off her powerful and supple voice on both obscure fare ("Cuckoo in the Clock") and perennial classics from Tin Pan Alley ("My Blue Heaven"). And while some might balk at the Mancini-like lounge touches informing highlights like the fiercely delivered "From This Moment On" and a bravura reading of "Night and Day," one must ask what would be better to temper the driving rhythms, frenetic horn charts, and Horne's theatrical phrasing…

The Lenten season of 1679 was a cold, rainy, and dreary affair. The new Pope, Innocent XI, was no supporter of the increasingly permissive nature of Roman aristocracy, and he took measures to enforce edicts prohibiting staged performances before a paying public, as well as a general ban on the appearance of women on the stage. Reluctantly granted, however, was permission for private performances, and this concession led to the fortuitous circumstances that made the premiere of Scarlatti’s first opera possible—the ingenuity of the Bernini brothers who produced the work; a liberal interpretation of “private performance”; the support and attendance of Queen Christina of Sweden; and, certainly not least, the fact that Pope Innocent had left the city during the carnival, leaving the enforcement of his conservatism to some of the very cardinals who most enjoyed and supported public theatre!

Mental Train: The Island Years 1969-1971 is a deep dive into the wild, wooly years before Mott the Hoople discovered glam. In other words, it's Mott the Hoople before they had anything resembling a hit but were still one of the hardest, heaviest, and weirdest rock bands to roam the land – and one of the most prolific, too. This six-disc box set covers a mere three years, but it was three years where they released four albums, piling up B-sides and other strays along the way. A figure in British modern jazz for over half a century, Don Rendell was both active protagonist and key witness to the main developments in the music from its rise out of tiny clubs and back rooms on up to the most prestigious national stages. From his earliest performances in London’s West End and his work of the 50s and 60s — most not ably with the Don Rendell-Ian Carr Quintet — to the lower profile work of the 70s and 80s, his quite assurance and consistent performance marked him out as a highly respected figure among his peers.

Alfred Schnittke – author of three operas, ten symphonies as well as numerous concert and chamber works – had a complex and confusing identity. He was born in the Russian city of Engels to a mother descended from the Volga Germans (ethnic Germans recruited by Catherine the Great to settle along the Volga River in the 18th century and later deported by Stalin in 1941) and a Frankfurt-born Jewish journalist of half Lithuanian descent.
