George Szell (/ˈsɛl/; June 7, 1897 – July 30, 1970), originally György Széll, György Endre Szél, or Georg Szell, was a Hungarian-born American conductor and composer. He is widely considered one of the twentieth century's greatest conductors.

Expressly conceived as a “companion piece” to Carl Orff’s enduringly popular Carmina Burana, Enjott Schneider’s “Orbe Rotundo” received “exceptionally enthusiastic applause for a contemporary work” (Neue Musikzeitung) at its premiere. The composer describes the work (“a collection of pictures on Latin and medieval texts”) as a continuation and expansion of themes dealt with in Carmina Burana. Schneider also utilizes the exact vocal and instrumental forces of Orff’s composition, all of which were in top form for this live recording of the premiere performance.

About an hour’s drive from Stockholm, there is a place called Ilandet—a patch of Swedish countryside overgrown with an abandoned apple orchard, with century-old trees stretching across verdant fields. It’s one of those places that invites introspection, where the sound and sights and smells of nature can envelop you entirely, and transport you far away from the humdrum of modern life. It’s in this environment where Nils Berg, the jazz composer and multi-instrumentalist, conceived of his new album, the hypnotic and breathtaking Coming and Going.

Composer Eugene O’Brien teams up with Washington D.C. based ensemble The 21st Century Consort, led by conductor Christopher Kendall, for an album of two of his ensemble compositions, Algebra of Night and Elegy to the Spanish Republic. The two pieces both take inspiration from a constellation of sources related to iconic places. Algebra of Nightfor voice and piano quartet sets poetry by six poets who lived in Manhattan at some point and whose work was shaped by the experience of that multi-layered metropolis.

Since announcing their arrival with debut album in 1991, Blur went on to revolutionise the sound of English popular music with six successive UK #1 albums and a string of Top 10 singles, including two No 1s, helping to propel the band to mass popularity at home and abroad. One of the biggest British bands of the last three decades, Blur have released eight studio albums and collected ten NME Awards, six Q Awards, five BRIT Awards and an Ivor Novello Award, and played live to millions of devoted fans across the globe.

That said, this is typical Teddy Wilson, with his light silvery touch. The track selections are fairly standard for Wilson, which is another reason why I did not award it a total five stars. He is accompanied by Arvel Shaw on bass and Bert Dahlander on drums.

One of a few big names to come to Santiago for Rock in Chile (Bryan Adams, Eric Clapton, and Mick Taylor being the others), most of David Bowie's setlist from the first evening was broadcast on national television - although with a slightly dodgy mix, and a VHS tape that hadn't been stored in the best conditions for seventeen years after the show. Good setlist, and you get to see plenty of Bowie being a theatrical and magnetising performer.

Gilberto Gil is one of the greatest names in Brazilian popular music. His musical talents allow him to easily change styles and perform other music genres such as pop, rock, and reggae.

Scherchen was born in Berlin. Originally a violist, he played among the violas of the Bluthner Orchestra of Berlin while still in his teens. He conducted in Riga from 1914 to 1916 and in Königsberg from 1928 to 1933, after which he left Germany in protest of the new Nazi regime and worked in Switzerland.

Praised for his “long-breathed phrases and luscious tone” by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Canadian flutist Conor Nelson presents a new recording of Telemann’s 12 Fantasias for two Flute, a glorious mélange of genres and styles, inviting performers and listeners to myriad interpretational challenges and delights.

"Revolutions" is the ninth studio album by electronic musician and composer Jean-Michel Jarre. The album spans several genres, including symphonic industrial, Arabian inspired, light guitar pop and ethnic electro jazz. The album reached number #2 in the UK charts, Jarre's best chart position since "Oxygène". The Destination Docklands concert in London coincided with the release of the album.

"Up!" is the fourth studio album by Canadian singer Shania Twain. Three versions of the album were released: a pop version (red disc), a country version (green disc), and an international version (blue disc); all three discs contain exactly the same track listing. In the US, "Up!" debuted at No. 1 with sales of 874,000 copies. On September 23, 2004, the RIAA certified Up! at 11× Platinum, giving her the distinction of being the only female artist to have three consecutive Diamond albums released in the United States.

This second full-length album from British singer-songwriter Ben Howard, released in 2014, was certified gold, peaked at number one in the UK and went top 10 in several other countries. The two-time BRIT Award winner certainly rose to the challenge of living up to his 2011 debut, the Mercury Award nominated, million-selling "Every Kingdom".

Alvvays (pronounced "Always") is a Canadian indie pop band formed in Toronto, Ontario in 2011. Their debut album, "Alvvays", was released in 2014, peaking at number one on the US college charts. Their second studio album, "Antisocialites", was released in September 2017. Alvvays' music has been described as jangle pop by the music press and its members. According to Rankin, the band's emphasis is primarily on strong melodies, rather than for a specific genre: "If old people ask, I say it sounds like the Cranberries. If young people ask, I call it jangle pop. If a punk asks, I say it's pop". The band sounds similar to Best Coast and has often been compared to Camera Obscura.

This 1956 release features Miles Davis backed by an all-star group including vibraphonist Milt Jackson who shares co-billing, Jackie McLean on alto saxophone on his two original contributions, pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Art Taylor. In addition to McLean's two songs, the rest of the programme contains Ray Bryant's "Changes" and "Bitty Ditty", written by Thad Jones.
