Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890–1974) wrote across all genres but is known for his works for an unusual instrument. Where his 1944 work, Petite symphonie concertante, uses the instrument in conjunction with harp and piano, his 1951–1952 work, Concerto for harpsichord and small orchestra, takes the instrument and pits it against a small orchestra. The instrument in question is the harpsichord. However, this is not the harpsichord of the 17th and 18th centuries, which died and vanished in the 19th century, but the new revival harpsichord of the 20th century.

Direction of Travel is a full length album from the UK based artist Andrew Land and is his first appearance on the Ambient Soundscapes label. Direction of Travel contains seven atmospheric ambient textures and features a rework from Low Profile.

Luke Schneider is a pedal steel guitarist based in Nashville. An Ohio native, Schneider moved to Tennessee to go to college with dreams of becoming a folk-rock stylist but has recently found his place in the landscape of New Age and pastoral Americana. His well-received debut solo album, Altar of Harmony (Third Man Records), is a collection of ambient compositions created entirely by pedal steel. His work on It Is Solved By Walking continues the recent experimental elevation of the pedal-steel guitar and delves deeper into the worlds of ambient sounds and moods.

Milan Records has released a soundtrack album for the giant screen documentary Blue Whales – Return of the Giants. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner Steven Price (Gravity, Last Night in Soho, Our Planet, Fury, Baby Driver, Over the Moon, The Aeronauts). SO THIS TAPE STARTED while the entire band was decamped at an undisclosed location working on the next Mountain Goats album, and I had brought books with me to read, and one of them was Pierre Chuvin’s A Chronicle of the Last Pagans, which I was reading as research material for another thing I’m working on; and it’s been a long time since I sat around playing music and thinking about antiquity, but I used to do it all the time, and several of you know that because the old tapes are all littered with stories about Ajax and Agamemnon and the cult of Cybele, stories which, when I was learning them, got me so fired up that as soon as I got out of class I’d drive home in my yellow 1969 Superbeetle and write songs about them.

Few groups have had an impact on the international rock scene as Whitesnake.
