This recording came together as an offset from the Crisis & Opportunity Vol. 3 - Unfold creative development phase. For 4 days in early 2021, Lewis Moody, Benjamin Muralt and I bunkered down in a tiny studio near Finsbury Park, tracking some of the pre-planned ideas (The final productions of Gone Up In Flames, Child & Falling Fast for example) as well as having some open improvised jams with the hope of generating some fresh material (Wasted Time & Drumbella were some of the by-products of these improvisations).

Pianist Mal Waldron had a brooding chordal style, initially influenced by Thelonious Monk but quite individual. He was flexible enough to fit into both hard bop and avant-garde settings. Originally Waldron played jazz on the alto sax and classical music on piano but, while at Queens College, he decided to switch to jazz piano. His associations with Charles Mingus from 1954 to 1956 and with Billie Holiday as her last accompanist from 1957 to her death in 1959 gave him a much higher profile. This 1959 session yielded a concept album of sorts; subtitled Mal Waldron Plays Moods of Billie Holiday, it's dedicated to Holiday. Frequent collaborator Jackie McLean plays alto sax on Waldron's signature tune, the title track, which Waldron co-wrote with Lady Day.

One of the best-known players of the post-Coltrane generation, Texas tenor saxophonist Billy Harper earned his spurs with Art Blakey, Randy Weston, Gil Evans, and Max Roach. This 1979 album features Harper’s then-current working group. Fellow Texan Malcolm Pinson and Harper have been playing partners since high school. Bassist Wayne Dockery gained recognition through his work with Art Blakey; trumpeter Everett Hollins’ roots are grounded in rhythm and blues including work with the legendary Otis Redding, and pianist Armen Donelian worked with jazz giants Lionel Hampton and Sonny Rollins.

Kula Shaker are an English Psychedelic Rock band. Led by frontman Crispian Mills, the band came to prominence during the Post-Britpop era of the late 1990s. "K" is the band's debut album. When it was released, it became the fastest selling debut album in Britain since Elastica's debut the previous year. The album reached the #1 position in the UK charts, however in America it stalled at #200 in the Billboard charts. The Grateful Dead's Psychedelic Rock style is an influence on Kula Shaker's first and second albums.

While Méndez’s soundworld has an unquestionable affinity with that of European composers like Helmut Lachenmann and his mentors Pierluigi Billone and Rebecca Saunders, the conceptual underpinning of his works is filled with allusions to composers, writers, and visual artists from his native Latin America, and with subtle references to his own professional pursuits and artistic collaborations in North America and Southeast Asia.
