Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Brian Lynch continues his Songbook series with Vol. 2: Dance the Way U Want To, a reclamation of his back catalog through remakes and reinvention. Filtering hard bop through an Afro-Caribbean lens, Lynch kicks off this edition with a brand new tune: “E.P.’s Plan B,” a hipswaying tribute to Latin jazz piano legend Eddie Palmieri that perfectly balances improvisation with danceability. As it happens, Palmieri isn’t the only one of Lynch’s heroes to receive a nod – well-respected trumpeter Tom Harrell gets some love in a groovy, eponymous tune, while the infamous Rudy Ray “Dolemite” Moore gets a shout out in the oddly strident “Disco Godfather,” another new song.

While Kerber saw Tiersen incorporating modular synthesis and sampling into the recording process, his follow up album, 11 5 18 2 5 18, was born from further experimentation in the studio as the artist prepared for a performance at Berlin’s modular and synthesiser festival, Superbooth. Using samples as his source, Tiersen has resampled, reprogrammed and recomposed existing audio to create entirely new tracks unrecognisable and decontextualised from their original versions. The album completes a story he started Kerber but where that took a more nuanced and subtle approach, 11 5 18 2 5 18 brings the listener into new sonic spaces.

She also began moving onto the fringes of jazz and established a local reputation at first, before becoming well known among contemporary jazz audiences both at home and abroad. Pianist and Composer Rita Marcotulli's DSD Album "The Light Side of the Moon" features jazz music written by herself, apart from two tracks. In the booklet you can read a personal story about each of the tracks (in Italian, French and English).

Virpi Räisänen, one of the most sought after Finnish female singing talents at the moment, has garnered an impressive list of honours and achievements both as a mezzo soprano and earlier as a concert violinist. Next to her successful violin career singing was always her other passion, earning her singing diploma with the highest distinction. Her warm mezzo voice and her strong musicality is leading her from one success to another. "The Legacy of Mahler" is a collection of late Romanticism Lieder by Mahler as well as Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, Dmitri Shostakovich and Benjamin Britten, who were all strongly inspired by Mahler. Räisänen's duo partner at the piano is the highly-acclaimed Marita Viitasalo.

Shawn and the Wolf are a unique and highly accessible jazz duo that combines trombone with guitar, two instruments seldom heard together. While their music is definitely rooted in a jazz sensibility, they take inspiration from a variety of genres, creating arrangements of tunes like The Beatles' 'Money Can't Buy Me Love' and Burt Bacharach's 'Close to You'. Their music bridges gaps between genres and invites listeners in to an intimate and friendly musical space.

After a period-instrument reading of the Symphony no.1 that received unanimous acclaim from the critics, François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles return to Mahler. Joined by the luminous voice of Sabine Devieilhe for the famous finale, they offer us their vision of the Fourth Symphony, which in its own way marks the composer’s transition to modernity, and reveal unsuspected colours and instrumental balances. We still have much to learn about the polyphonic transparency possible within Mahler’s big orchestra!

1773 was a key year for orchestral music. Mozart composed his “little G minor Symphony”, no.25, and began work on the music for the play Thamos, König in Ägypten. In Paris, Grétry perfected the opéra-comique, a genre combining the light and the serious, and completely renewed the musical drama. Is it a mere coincidence that their compositions of that year show the same intensity and dramatic efficacy?

Julie Roset, a young French soprano from Avignon, immediately attracted attention with her first recital for Ricercar (Nun danket alle Gott with Clematis) and went on to record a recital of works by Sigismondo d'India with Mariana Flores that met with great critical acclaim. In this new recording she tackles several of Handel’s masterpieces on religious themes: his Salve Regina , Gloria and the motet Silete venti were all composed at the time when the young Handel had been inspired to new heights by his discovery of Roman musical life.

The great Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk makes a triumphal return to chamber music with his regular piano partner Håvard Gimse. The programme features two English composers, Benjamin Britten and his teacher Frank Bridge, whose Cello Sonata was written during the First World War and is tinged with despair and searing emotional force.

Ravel and the Basque Country have always been one and the same. His Concerto in G major is the central work of this album and is presented here in an original arrangement for piano and small ensemble. Pianist Aurèle Marthan also pays homage to his splendid hometown, Guéthary, where he founded the festival Classic à Guéthary.
