Bert Jansch was one of the most influential figures in British folk. Legendary artists including Jimmy Page, Paul Simon, Elton John, Nick Drake and Fleet Foxes have acknowledged Jansch as a major innovator of acoustic guitar playing. He is listed on Rolling Stone’s “Top 100 Guitar Players of All Time”. The album includes the Jansch classics “Wild Mountain Thyme,” “Sit Down Beside Me” and “Up to the Stars.” Jansch brings his stunning technique and eclecticism to this stellar recording.

The last album by Don Ellis' Big Band before the trumpeter suffered a heart attack that would ultimately cut short both his career and his life, this underrated set finds Ellis' orchestra consisting of seven brass (including tuba), four strong woodwind players, a string quartet, and an enlarged six-piece rhythm section that includes guitarist Jay Graydon and keyboardist Milcho Leviev. A special highlight is "Invincible" which is an outstanding feature for altoist Vince Denham; whatever happened to him? Ellis composed four of the eight originals including one titled "The Devil Made Me Write This Piece!" This out-of-print LP is well worth searching for.

With reference to American forebears of the ‘60s and ‘70s in the writing and arrangements, Ahlén and company still present a bitingly original group sound that will hopefully continue to be refined. Unwoman is a San Francisco-based cellist-singer-songwriter Erica Mulkey. Layered with skillful cello, rich vocals, and electronically arranged beats, her solo music is a futuristic homage to her classical training. Guitar Talk is a collection of intimate guitar duet recordings featuring Joel Harrison with Ben Monder, Steve Cardenas, Pete McCann, David Gilmore, and legendary bassist Steve Swallow. Joel Harrison penned nine of the original compositions in 2019. The other two cuts are solo efforts, a gem-like rendition of Eillington’s Reflections in D, and a haunting solo take on America the Beautiful. All tracks were recorded with two amps in a room, no overdubs. Harrison is in the left speaker in all duos.

His rumbas and mambos are played with buoyant, aristocratic grace and psychological ambiguity and he is (rightly) almost insolently effortless, bringing debonair virtuosity and swagger when it comes to the unravelling and the sassy Afro-Cuban tumbao and swing. All in all this is music inhabited from deep inside the Afro-Cuban idiom, evoked as few young musicians can even hope to try.
