Having barely managed to coexist for even half a decade at the tail end of the post-Beatles rock explosion, there is little wonder that the delightfully obscure work of New York’s Sir Lord Baltimore is yet a question mark for the vast majority of heavy metal’s legions.

Through duo commissions performed by violinist Jennifer Koh and the composers themselves, Limitless celebrates the collaborative relationship between composer and performer, while also exploring the historical role of the composer as performer. This spirit of collaboration contrasts with the conventional notion that composition and performance are discrete and detached parts of the musical process.

Tanja Tetzlaff in conversation with Friederike E. Westerhaus: On this recording you are pairing three Bach cello suites with two pieces by Thorsten Encke. How does this coupling change the experience for the player and for the listener?

„This complete recording of Franz Liszt’s Petrarch Sonnets attempts to highlight the significance of his different versions of the three Sonnets 47, 109, und 123 – possibly for the first time. Musicologists are baffled by the fact that Liszt wrote several versions of the same works. He even set the same texts to different music: not twice, but occasionally three or more times – an absolute exception in the history of music. This is both bewildering and rewarding: Liszt aficionados can embark on a treasure hunt through the scores.

This recital of familiar Bach organ works performed by Ton Koopman is a very good one he mixes favorites like the Toccata & Fugue and the Passacaglia & Fugue with lesser known chorale preludes.
