After over eight months of continuous recording at their own Britannia Row studios in 1976, ‘Animals’ was originally released in 1977 and became one of the band’s most popular albums. Or more accurately, Jim (later Roger) McGuinn, Gene Clark and David Crosby signed to Columbia Records, with Michael Clarke and Chris Hillman officially joining the roster later. But before that auspicious major label signing, The Byrds’ bags were packed, pre-flyte, it was zero hour…and after that day, they were destined to be high as a kite…eight miles high. (Pardon the mixing of musical metaphors.) The band’s pre-Columbia days have been anthologized over the years almost as extensively as their “official” catalogue, with the earliest release coming in 1969 on Together Records, simply titled Preflyte.

Blessed with a gift for musical invention and structural organisation, Johann Stamitz was one of the pioneering figures in symphonic music before the emergence of Haydn. He drove the development of symphonic form via the assimilation of the new operatic overture style resulting in works of brilliance and skilful orchestration. His Op. 3 symphonies, though not composed as a set, showcase why Stamitz was held in such high regard and was so influential: outer movements fizz with energy, and contain virtuosic string writing with frequent dynamic contrasts, while slow movements are intricate and refined.

Rossini’s Eduardo e Cristina was a huge success in its day, but as perhaps the last ‘centone’ opera by a major composer, it became forgotten under the subsequent tide of Romantic idealism. Today we can put these prejudices aside and enjoy this masterful creation for what it is: a hugely entertaining parade of beautiful and spectacular musical ‘hits’ set to a familiar story of secret love, dramatic crisis and triumphant resolution. This 2017 Bad Wildbad revival was summed up as ‘an evening of pure bel canto pleasure!’ by Operagazet.

These three recordings cement the bond between the award-winning composer Richard Danielpour and the conductor Misha Rachlevsky, one of the composer’s most dedicated and perceptive interpreters. With a portfolio of over 250 works, including major concertos and technical studies, Émile Sauret – hugely admired by Brahms, Liszt and Tchaikovsky – was one of the most distinguished figures of his time, a violinist with a stupendous technique and a profoundly analytical mind. With its spellbinding effects and exceptional variation of form and dynamics, Volume 3 of his Études-Caprices, Op. 64 continues the exploration of this monumental work’s fusion of virtuosity and expression (Volume 1 is on 8573704 and Volume 2 on 8573843). Nazrin Rashidova plays on Sauret’s own 1685 Stradivari violin.

The dichotomy that characterises Louis Couperin’s output for harpsichord is not merely formal in nature. On the one hand, préludes non mesurés; on the other, dance movements: the former are essentially innovative, while the latter continue a typically French tradition.

'Poldark' actress and singer Eleanor Tomlinson makes an appearance on several tracks - her debut album, produced by Anne Dudley, peaked at Number 14 in the UK Albums Chart. In 2017, Dudley's score for 'Poldark' was nominated for a BAFTA TV award in the Best Original Music category.

This nearly 90-minute set featuring Joe Beck and Red Mitchell comes from a 1980 performance at the legendary New York nightclub Bradley's. Without rehearsal or anything in the way of preplanning, the guitarist and the bassist intuitively work their way through a mixture of time-tested standards and jazz classics, coming as close to musical perfection as is possible. Carl Perkins' "Grooveyard" is played softly rather than in its typical hard bop setting, while the swing classic "Soft Winds" retains only a hint of the original chord changes, taking on a more bluesy flavor in their adventurous take. Johnny Mandel's lovely ballad "Emily" seems forever associated with Bill Evans, though this compelling take makes its own mark. Three gems by Jimmy Van Heusen are included, including a lyrical "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," a fluid "Like Someone in Love," and an intricate "Darn That Dream."
