Following the success across Europe of his eight ‘Grand Suites’ for harpsichord in 1720, albeit in a doctored and pirated edition, Handel resolved to make good on his promise of a sequel, ‘reckoning it my duty with my small talent to serve a Nation from which I have received so generous a protection.’

Krambambuli is the debut album of the Hannes Dunker Trio. The rather calm, pensive album leads the listener through multifaceted soundscapes, in which the Berlin-based composer and drummer deliberately gives his fellow musicians Eike Wulfmeier (p) and Clara Däubler (b) space for their own evolvement and musical input. The whole stylistic spectrum of inspirations that Dunker has absorbed in many dierent projects over the past years can be heard: rock à la Radiohead or even elements of Israeli and Latin American music are mixed into the melancholic, Scandinavian-Nordic sound of the album.

Admiring and adept at the gypsy gesture, he carries high the legacy of his masters and is deeply impregnated to translate a first personal impression, invigorating, full of virtuoso tension.

This is an oddly cool performance of one of the most overtly sentimental–indeed, gushing–pieces in the violin repertoire. In an effort simply to present, rather than interpret, the music, Hahn seems to have gone overboard–she plays with little portamento and vibrato, she keeps away from the music's soul. All that having been said, the playing itself is faultless, her tone lovely, and by the last movement her virtuosity is truly impressive. The classic performance remains Menuhin's, but Hahn and Davis and his LSO have much to offer here. Vaughan Williams' gorgeous-if-sappy "The Lark Ascending" is played ravishingly, with more overt feeling than the Elgar, and again the LSO add greatly to the pleasure with the woodwind section–and clarinet in particular–shining brightly.

Michelangeli’s recital disc is also heavy on mazurkas, offering ten of them along with a single prelude, the G minor Ballade, and the B flat minor Scherzo. The playing is striking, marked by extraordinary refinement of tone and articulation. In the scherzo, Michelangeli achieves a transcendent realization, full of anticipation, beautiful and intense at same time – one of the great accounts of the piece on record. Originally released in 1972, the recording has fairly low impact sonics, but a nice pickup with plenty of hall ambience." (Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide)

On this recording, Rea's piano is slightly placed to the right and Sellani's to the left, but their sounds merge and intersect with each other in the middle. The music they create together is beautiful, lyrical and emotional. What stands out is their "singing" quality which can be attributed to their Italian heritage. The heartwarming interaction of two great souls is captured with marvelous sonics: the pianos sound pure, natural, detailed and warm. This is a wonderful, wonderful piano duo album.

David Hazeltine is a prolific pianist who releases at least one leader album a year, in addition to his work as a sideman and a member of well-known groups such as One For All. It is astonishing that his numerous CDs are never dull or boring. There is no doubt that he is at the most creative and productive stage of his career. In the past, Hazeltine has released several "songbook" CDs from Venus Records, paying tribute to pianists and composers such as Bill Evans, Bud Powell and Horace Silver. His latest is a Burt Bacharach songbook. As usual, Hazeltine shows off his impressive arranging skills and reimagines such Bacharach classics as "The Look of Love", "Walk on by", "This Guy is in Love", "Alfie" and "Close to You". Hazeltine's crisp and assured piano performance is creatively supported by his bandmates and fellow One For All members, David Williams and Joe Farnsworth.
