The Bay Area shoegaze group offer up an early listen of their fifth studio album their first in eight years. With the recent reunions of such canonical figures as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride, shoegaze is unquestionably back. Consequently, so is Film School. With their first album since 2010’s Fission, the San Francisco noisemakers have returned with the perfect thing; Bright to Death is not only a loyal adherent to its genre’s tradition, but also exhibits some of the band’s sharpest work to date.

Jill Sobule acknowledges that the nearly decade-long gap between albums was due to procrastination. "I went through an extended period of time of finding other things and avoiding doing a new album," says Sobule, whose new Nostalgia Kills comes out Sept. 14, with the track "I Don't Wanna Wake Up" premiering exclusively below. "There were things that happened in my life the death of a parent, a breakup, a move. I was my own procrastinatrix, is what I call it. But I think those kind of jostle you back into the creative mode, and I started loving music again loving listening, loving writing and the original spirit of why I did this in the first place, I suppose.

Classic rock giants, The Guess Who, are back with their first studio album of new material in over 30 years. It’s not unheard of for Christian and gospel singers to make the leap to pop music, but it’s a bit more rare for an artist to pivot in the opposite direction. Tori Kelly’s debut, Unbreakable Smile, was a star-studded affair aimed straight at the charts, executive-produced by Max Martin and featuring a collab with Ed Sheeran. Her second album, Hiding Place, is full-on gospel, but (good news!) Kelly’s pop ambitions remain fully intact. The orchestral-soul flourishes of opener “Masterpiece (feat. Lecrae)” and the funky R&B lilt of “Sunday” seem to proclaim that these are not your grandmother’s Sunday-go-to-meeting church songs. Even when traditional hymns are her source material, as in the devotional “Psalm 42” and the a cappella “Soul’s Anthem (It Is Well),” she transforms them into rousing, rhythmic choruses.
