A follow-up to trumpeter Donald Byrd's hit A New Perspective, this LP also features an eight-voice choir conducted by Coleridge Perkinson and arrangements by Duke Pearson and the leader. The vocalists have a larger role than in the earlier date and Byrd's quintet (with tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and pianist Herbie Hancock) is augmented by organist Freddie Roach, guitarist Grant Green and a dozen brass players.

There is no doubt that Mitsuko Uchida is one of the leading Mozart pianists. And that fact alone gives this release credibility. But if we look deeper we find that this release is a magnificent example of her ability. Full marks must go to Phillips for bringing this major project together. The recording concept and organisation by Erik Smith and Rupert Faustle at the Henry Wood Hall London give us magnificent piano sound. The recordings were made during the 1980s. The set is recorded digitally and the sound is excellent in tone and balance.

It's hard to believe that any pianist, living or dead (or, probably, yet-to-be-born) could match, much less surpass, these performances. It was Richter, after all, who made Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition almost as important an item in the standard repertory of the piano as Ravel's orchestration is in that of the orchestra. And it was Richter's performances of it, as well as his example, that have ignited the interest of subsequent generations of pianists in the Bunte Blätter, heretofore one of the most obscure works in the Schumann canon.

The libretto was originally written in German and this recording maintains this language version.

During the first half of the nineteenth century Sigismund von Neukomm was one of Europe’s most highly regarded composers. Although he maintained an intimate artistic friendship with Joseph Haydn until the older composer’s death, he was a composer with a mind of his own and full of originality. This fact is very convincingly demonstrated by his four orchestral fantasies presented here which he termed an ‘Essay in a New Genre’. Here we encounter Sturm und Drang and anticipations of romanticism in their purest form.

Two CD set highlighting Sharon's 15 year career. The tracks featured on the album brilliantly encapsulate the scope of her musical influences. County Clare-born accordionist/multi-instrumentalist/bandleader is long overdue for a career retrospective and this two-CD set overflows with high points. Although an acknowledged master of Irish traditional styles, this least complacent and most generous of artists never ceases experimenting. The first disc contains instrumentals cherry-picked from six albums. "Cavan Potholes" depicts omni-present Irish road conditions and "The Mighty Sparrow", taped during the "A Woman’s Heart" tour, is a jig augmented by a Caribbean beat and raucously apt sax solo. Disc two is given over to vocals, many of which are performed by stars from other genres. Jackson Browne’s "A Man Of Constant Sorrow" is given a Hibernian Grand Ol’ Opry treatment compete with lovely back-up singing from Mary Staunton. Damien Dempsey, a sensitive roughneck of a Dublin singer-composer, gives the Lennon/McCartney chestnut "Norwegian Wood" a new lease on life and also turns up in "Courtin’ In The Kitchen", a profane little comedy led by the inimitable Dessie O’Halloran. But the late Kirstie MacColl’s treatment of Astor Piazzolla’s "Libertango" is magic of a more wistful, shadowy kind, making us miss her all the more. –Christina Roden

Based in Los Angeles, California, USA, Joyous Noise comprised Lee Montgomery (vocals), Marc McClure (guitar, keyboards, dobro), Lance Wakely (lead guitar), Happy Smith (bass) and Dennis Dragon (drums). McClure was previously a member of Levitt And McClure, an excellent country-influenced act associated with San Francisco’s Beau Brummels.
A similar style of music was present on both Joyous Noise albums, but an interest in jazz was equally apparent. McClure subsequently embarked on an ill-starred solo career before joining the reformed Spanky And Our Gang in 1976. Dennis Dragon, brother of Daryl Dragon of Captain And Tennille, later joined the irreverent Surf Punks.
"Wanderingman" is the band's 2nd effort. Compared to the first album, it is more progressive/psychedelic oriented as 'Wanderingman Suite' is a killer track in the album which reminds of typical American progsters in the same era. First time on CD!

=1’ is the highly anticipated new album by one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Deep Purple.
Produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin, this record captures the band’s pioneering classic sound without relying on nostalgia, embodying the essence and attitude of their 1970s incarnation possibly more than any other recent album.
The enigmatic title ‘=1’ symbolises the idea that in a world growing ever more complex, everything eventually simplifies down to a single, unified essence. It all adds up to one. With three consecutive No.1 albums in their back pocket and a new energy powering them forward, ‘=1’ represents Deep Purple at their pinnacle.

The debut recording session of the Adderley brothers, saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and trumpeter Nat. Given the shining star of recognition that Cannonball achieved in his short life, it's amazing that the brothers' first date would be with Nat as leader. And the band on this record is, well, stellar, even for that time in 1955: Paul Chambers on bass, Horace Silver on piano, and Roy Haynes on drums. Issued in the Desert Island Discs series by Verve, this is truly one of them. It's a hard, post-bop date that features a quintet of excellent players having a good old time in the studio. All tunes are by the Adderley brothers, who, at this time, were free to exploit their own identities (Cannonball had yet to be saddled with his "new Bird" status, since Charlie Parker had been dead less than six months)…

Cirkel was a short-lived Dutch Prog act from the town of Gorinchem. They were active during the early-80's, featuring Hans den Hartog on guitars/keyboards, Hennie van Mourik on lead vocals/bass, Chris van Hoogdalem on guitars and Ad Struijk of the Art/Punk Rock group The Divorce on drums. Their sole album ''The First Goodbye'' was recorded at the Ballad Sound Studio in Vuren and was a private 83' release on Goodbye Records. Reinier Bruijns contributed his acoustic guitar on one track. Similar-sounding with tons of other 80's bands influenced by Classic Prog, Cirkel played a melodic Neo Prog with sensitive vocals and interesting instrumental variety, split in two different styles. Some tracks are fairly symphonic with good keyboard layers and evident inspirations from bands like Genesis and Camel, performed in the way Prog music was delivered in the 80's…

On Last Night, Moby is as blissfully out of touch with modern club music as he is current. As he explains (of course) in the album's liner notes, he has been in the thick of New York City club culture since the early '80s, and he takes the opportunity here to pay tribute to a number of dance music strains that have fallen in and out of fashion - in a couple cases, they've recently fallen back into fashion - including some angles he hasn't taken in well over a decade. The sturdiest, most appealing tracks tend to be where Moby breaks out with some highly energized combination of rollicking pianos, stabbing keyboards, and random divas, mixing and matching rave, Hi-NRG, and disco: "Everyday It's 1989," "Stars," and "Disco Lies" (featuring a vocalist who is nearly a dead ringer for a young Taylor Dayne) would've had no place on any of the last five Moby albums…
