Dave Grohl added munitions to Seven Years in Tibet and Hallo Spaceboy . Robert Smith, the most inspired guest choice, sang The Last Thing You Should Do and an oddly heartening Quicksand (Smith had lobbied to sing Young Americans ). Billy Corgan helped close out the show like a kid who d won a contest. For some fans, this immersion in the present tense was disappointing. The biographer David Buckley made a case for the prosecution: Playing live with Iggy Pop for the first time in 20 years. Playing live with Robert Fripp and Brian Eno for the first time ever. Bringing on Nile Rodgers for Let s Dance. The only person who d been invited that night who actually hailed from Bowie s past, who had been Bowie s influence, was Lou Reed. At the end of the show, Bowie made a concession: he came out alone with his 12-string acoustic guitar and sang Space Oddity . I don t know where I m going from here, he said. But I promise I won t bore you. Then he was off for another year of tours and TV spots. He d dodged the snare, at least this time.

New York psych-pop band Crumb return with AMAMA, their most carefree and open-hearted album to date. A soundscape full of playful and patchwork experimentation - glitchy pitch-shifted vocals, cell phone recordings, nautical blips, sax mouthpiece solos, blasted drum samples, and piano strings dampened with Silly Putty - AMAMA continues to deepen the band's hypnotic sound in a cohesive line back through 2021's Ice Melt, 2019's Jinx, and breakout EPs Locket and Crumb. Without a doubt, AMAMA is Crumb - singer and multi-instrumentalist Lila Ramani, keyboardist and saxophonist Bri Aronow, bassist Jesse Brotter, and drummer Jonathan Gilad - at their most animated. AMAMA exists at the crossroads of psychedelia, pop, jazz, and rock, and cements Crumb as a band uniquely their own. The first two albums by UFO featured an odd mix of crisp, focussed songs alternating with meandering electric guitar-led soundscapes. Flying starts off with perhaps their best of the former category, "Silver Bird." This story of a primitive islander seeing an airplane for the first time begins with a pleasant little acoustic guitar melody and builds into a soaring full-band musical expression of the wonder of flight. The next cut, all 19 minutes of it, conjures up the vaster expanses of space. To complain that "Star Storm" rambles is to miss the point; sometimes Michael Bolton's guitar is used as a pure sound effect rather than to convey any kind of rhythm or melody, and if you're patient, then listening can be an enjoyable, even absorbing, experience…

The great Julian Cannonball Adderley rose to prominence in the hard-bop era of the 1950's and 60's. After a successful stint with Miles Davis's sextet, including being featured on the seminal Davis records 'Milestones' and 'Kind of Blue', Adderley formed his own quintet with brother Nat on trumpet and cornet, and soon became the driving force behind the soul-jazz movement of the 1960's and 70's. No one would have guessed that the 46-year-old DownBeat Jazz Hall of Famer was in the last few months of his life when he stepped on stage at Montreal's In Concert Club on May 3, 1975. And nothing about the performance suggests that the hard bop sax legend was anything but at the top of his game. The 6-track set includes the Grammy Hall of Fame inductee hit tune Mercy Mercy Mercy, with Adderley's brother Nat on trumpet. The lineup for the quintet here is Cannonball Adderley (alto and soprano sax); Nat Adderley (trumpet); Michael Wolff (piano); Roy McCurdy (drums, percussion) and Walter Booker (bass). Originally released in 1977 on Dobre Records this LP has been unavailable on vinyl for over 40 years and makes its return pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Features liner notes by music historian Cary Ginell who wrote the book Walk Tall: The Music and Life of Cannonball Adderley. Notes include interviews with quintet members Michael Wolff and Roy McCurdy.

Sylvius Leopold Weiss was born in the then Bohemian province of Silesia (now in Poland) in 1687 and grew up under the strong influence of Losy, which can be seen clearly in his early compositions. After his Italian sojourn (1710-14), Weiss became deeply involved with the Prague musical milieu and, according to numerous documents, he must have spent much time there even after he was invited by Augustus the Strong, on the 23rd of August 1718, to become an "Electoral Saxon and Royal Polish Chamber Musician" at his court in Dresden. In the years between 1717 and 1724 he worked closely with Johann Christian Anthoni von Adlersfeld at the Prague Music Academy to create one of most extensive collections of his music ever assembled, what we now know as the "London Manuscript."

The relationship between Alex Harding and Lucian Ban has been long and fruitful. Their combination of elements of improvisational music have helped the pair develop a unique musical language that transcends the expectations of the jazz genre. Their new recording, Blutopia, highlights their attuned rapport while allowing their music to unfold with their own singular ensemble, propelled by the tuba stylings of the great Bob Stewart.
