After releasing a brilliant single by the Apartments on their Able label in 1979, the Go-Betweens almost added the band's leader Peter Milton Walsh to their lineup, but ultimately it didn't work out. "Walsh is night," said Grant McLennan. "We are day," added Robert Forster. After some more false starts, Walsh re-formed the Apartments and set about proving the duo right. Signed to Rough Trade after impressing them with a demo, the Apartments' debut album from 1985, The Evening Visits…and Stays for Years is a dark, brooding affair that features Walsh's idiosyncratic vocals and lyrics that hint at major emotional upheavals, or at least some very deep feels. Walsh's biting croon is balanced by layers of jangling acoustic and electric guitars and the occasional strings and horns, with a production style that calls to mind that of his former mate's concurrent work

This cd is chock full of tunes you may remember from when you were a child. Chances are that many of them were already vintage tunes even then. But try to find a good recording of Teddy Bear's Picnic and Ragtime Cowboy Joe. The recordings range from the '20s to the '50s, and it's interesting to see how much we have lost in children's music. Nostalgic and fun.

If there is a single savior of Celtic music, Alan Stivell is probably it. Since the end of the 1960s, he has done more to revive interest in the Celtic (specifically Breton) harp than anyone in the world and, in the process, almost singlehandedly made the world aware of native Breton Celtic music. Since 1971, he has been recording albums of extraordinary beauty and diversity, ranging from ancient Breton and Irish material to modern folk-rock, new age, and progressive rock. He was born Alan Cochevelou, the son of a harp-maker. His father had rediscovered the Breton harp, but young Alan started his musical life on a somewhat more conventional instrument, taking up the piano at age five.

At any given moment one can find five to ten thousand Marilyn Monroe items on eBay, which is more than you may encounter for Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon, though thousands shy of Elvis. So it's no surprise that a dance-mix album featuring the chanteuse would emerge, and though not perfect, Marilyn Monroe Greatest Hits Remixed is a fun listening experience. The "Dreamer Remix" of "Kiss Me" would segue nicely with Esquivel and other purveyors of the space-age lounge set. Ditto for James Hardway's rendition of "Happy Birthday," perhaps the album's most experimental track, and the one that adds something unique and extra to the sparse Monroe audio catalog.

The songs of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson could occupy a whole Hall Of Fame to themselves. There can’t be any students of popular music who are not familiar with at least a few of their classics, be they their own hits like ‘Solid’ or those they wrote for Motown’s ‘A’ list artists, such as ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ and ‘Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing’ for Marvin & Tammi and ‘Reach Out And Touch (Somebody’s Hand)’ for Diana Ross.
These and many like them are as much a part of our lives as getting up in the morning. Less well known outside of connoisseur soul circles are the songs they wrote in the years immediately leading up to ‘Ain’t No Mountain’, with their original collaborator Joshie “Jo” Armstead. Between 1964 and 1967, the trio collaborated on a significant number of superior songs to provide hits for artists including Chuck Jackson and Maxine Brown, Betty Everett, Aretha Franklin and scores more.

This remains the only recording of this exuberant and unique baroque piece, and a multiple award-winner. António Teixeira's extraordinary and grandly structured setting of the Te Deum was written for a New Year's Eve performance in 1734 in the Italian Church of his home city, Lisbon. Calling for eight soloists, five spaced choirs and a large orchestra, this lavish and ornate piece bubbles and sparkles through the text with an easy zest and breezy charm that is distinctively Portuguese, giving us a rare insight into musical life in Lisbon before the devastating earthquake of 1755.

Wagner's genius is often associated with his unique feeling for orchestration. Yet the transcriptions and paraphrases for piano solo recorded here lay bare the beauty and boldness of his harmonic language, with an evocative power unrivalled at the time. Nikolai Lugansky, at once narrator and virtuoso, immerses us in a world where the heroes of legend tell us - and with what loftiness of spirit! - of the torments and aspirations of humanity.

Peter Steele predicted that the follow-up to Bloody Kisses would accentuate Type O Negative's melodic side, specifically for the purpose of making money. Steele's attempt at "pop-goth" actually works well for a while; his cynical take on goth rock's typical subject matter is in full swing over the first half of October Rust, and the band gleefully wallows in its stated commercialism by personally thanking the listener for purchasing the album at its start and finish. Unfortunately, the songwriting runs out of steam over the second half, and the cover choice (Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl") doesn't lend as much this time out; the overall entertainment value suffers as a result. October Rust comes off as a promising concept and a nice try, but lacks the consistency to fully realize the band's potential

The times had certainly changed since Déjà Vu's release in 1970. Nevertheless, there was a hunger in audiences for a return to the harmony-soaked idealism with which the trio had been catapulted to popularity, and CSN consequently reached number two on the charts, behind Fleetwood Mac's megasuccessful Rumours. The music here is very good, though probably not up to the hard-to-match level of Crosby, Stills & Nash or Déjà Vu. Still, the songs showed a great deal of lyrical maturity and compositional complexity compared to those earlier albums (from a far more innocent time). "Just a Song Before I Go" was the latest of Graham Nash's radio-friendly acoustic numbers, and a Top Ten single. "See the Changes" and "Dark Star" ranked with the best of Stephen Stills' work, while David Crosby contributed three classics from his distinctive oeuvre: "Shadow Captain," "Anything at All," and the beautiful "In My Dreams"…
