Ballet is not a form for which British composers are generally known, but this CD includes four dance works by Malcolm Arnold: two of the composer's complete shorter ballets, Rinaldo and Armida and Electra, as well as suites from two of his longer ballets, Homage to the Queen and Sweeny Todd, performed with impressive enthusiasm by the BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba and recorded in imposed digital sound by Chandos.

This first solo release from tenor sax player Junior Cook came at the midpoint of his six-year tenure with the Horace Silver Band. It's a relaxed affair, paced a couple of notches below the intensity of a typical Silver date. Still, with Cook's front-line partner in the Silver group - trumpeter Blue Mitchell - on board, along with Silver's rhythm section, the 1961 session has a definite affinity with the hard bop style of the more famous parent group. There are also links to the cool tones of Miles Davis' early-'50s Blue Note releases and to the transitional work of the mid-'50s Max Roach-Clifford Brown Band. If the overall approach is subdued, this generally works to the music's benefit by bringing out the finer points of Cook's and Mitchell's' playing…

The Best is a compilation album by Bonnie Tyler released by Sony Music International. The album was released in 1993, and different versions were only released in France and the UK. The back cover art differs in each version while the front cover is identical. This compilation features another retrospective of Tyler's career. "It's a Heartache" and "Lost in France" are here, among other hits like "Total Eclipse of the Heart", "Faster Than the Speed of Night", "A Natural Woman", and the feature track "The Best". Some tracks also differ; the French version includes an extended version of "Band of Gold", while the UK edition features the Shakin' Stevens duet "A Rockin' Good Way", among other unique tracks. The UK version is cited to have been re-released on February 2, 1999. Meanwhile, the French version is cited on AllMusic with an October 7, 1996 release date; the album cover clearly proves the AllMusic title incorrect.

"Drive Home" is one of the notable cuts on Steven Wilson's (Porcupine Tree) brilliant The Raven That Refused to Sing and Other Stories, an album that redefined prog for the 21st century. The song's gorgeous meld of Pink Floyd's nocturnal atmospherics, the Moody Blues' melodic majesty, sprawling guitar solos, and Alan Parsons' crystalline production made it a standout track. This audio collection uses the single edit as its title track and leadoff. The set also includes an orchestral version of "The Raven That Refused to Sing" and the song "The Birthday Party" (which was previously only featured on the deluxe book edition of the Raven album). "The Holy Drinker," "Insurgentes," "The Watchmaker," and a live "The Raven That Refused To Sing" are all killer readings taken from a concert in Frankfurt.

Lady of the Night is the debut studio album by American singer Donna Summer. The album, which was produced by Pete Bellotte, was released in 1974 only in The Netherlands, and spawned the minor hit singles "The Hostage" and "Lady of the Night" in that country. The songs, written by the Moroder/Bellotte team, are mostly of the pop/rock/folk variety. All songs written and composed by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte; except "Domino", "Let's Work Together Now" and "Sing Along (Sad Song)" by Bellotte.

Imperial Quartet is the meeting of four improvising musicians, accomplices since 2010, the year that saw the formation arrive on the baptismal font. This is their fourth album coming out today, and it fills our sharp ears, after Grand Carnaval, in 2016, Slim Fat, in 2013, Impérial 4tet, in 2011, albums that I particularly recommend!

Alleingang (Going it Alone), Markus Becker’s second solo album is released by BERTHOLD records on October 29th 2021. In his own inimitable style, the renowned concert pianist has created a jazz and classical music mosaic. In his first solo album Freistil (Free Style) he developed structures out of largely spontaneous improvisations. “In Alleingang,” explains Becker “I most often thought out structures and themes first, and then created the music live in the Sendesaal, Radio Bremen’s concert hall, where as always they did such a great job. That suits my own ‘Alleinstellungsmerkmal’ which is a lovely German word for ‘unique selling point’.”

After a decade-long hiatus, alternative rock legends Pixies reunited for a triumphant set at Coachella 2004. Hitting the stage before a headline set by Radiohead, Pixies delivered a now-iconic performance packed full of classic tracks including ‘Where Is My Mind?’, ‘Here Comes Your Man’ and ‘Debaser’.

Though it contains material from as early as 1990, In Extremis mostly consists of recordings from 1996 to 1998. The music skirts the more challenging end of avant-prog, with good contributions from drummer David Kerman and vocalist Deborah Perry. Thinking Plague is a United States avant-garde progressive rock group founded in 1982 by guitarist/composer, Mike Johnson, and bass guitarist/drummer, Bob Drake. Based in Denver, Colorado, the band has been active off and on since 1982, taking on a number of musicians over the years. They have made six studio albums between 1984 and 2012, and released one live album recorded at NEARfest in 2000.

With "Le souffle des cordes" Renaud Garcia-Fons aims to go further in the meeting of classical and traditionnal instruments. It's a "crossover" project mixing composition and improvisation.

Pianist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Lenny White have teamed up once again to revisit their common roots in the seminal fusion band Return to Forever. On June 7, 2011, Concord Jazz released Forever, a two-CD set of 18 tunes that include updated RTF classics as well as jazz trio standards. In support of the release, a tour is planned for next summer.
