This collection of 17 sides was born, bred, and recorded in the Motor City between the dawn of the funk age in 1967 and its peak in 1978 as it gave way to the prominence of disco. Six of these selections were recorded by the amazing Black Nasty, one of Detroit's finest if under-noticed funk bands led by Kaiya and Artwell Mathews, and managed by their mother, R&B singer, songwriter, producer, and label owner (Northern Del-la and Big Hit) Johnnie Mae Matthews. These six tracks, which include their two-sided single "Party On Fourth Street," (Pts. 1 and 2), and the smoking "Mama Didn't Lie" – both vocal and instrumental versions – all come from the band's singles' catalog. None of them appeared on Black Nasty's Stax LP Talking to the People. In addition, there is an obscure 1970s-era Dramatics' tune in "Don't Leave Me to Be Lonely," Lynn Day's fire-breathing "Bit Off (More Than I Could Chew)," and the Dynamic Walton Brothers' all-too-rare "Funky Soul." There are three sides by Herbie Thompson, the Ohio-born soul singer who relocated to Detroit in 1970 and fronted a number of outfits – including a recording date by Black Nasty, which is featured here. Thompson is a versatile singer whose voice could change in not only tone but also in phrasing from track to track. His finest contribution here is the steamy hypnotic groover "It's Jungle Time." In addition to the major funky jams, there is also one bona fide underground soul classic in Timmy Shaw and Chuck Holiday's "You Better (Get Yourself Together)," rounding out an unexpected treasure trove of unusual and sought-after tracks by some of Detroit's finest in the heyday of funk.

The hot and funky Johnny Lewis Quartet recorded this massive slab of jazz in the early 70's, when the group's lineup consisted of organ, tenor, guitar, and very very hot drums. The LP contains some excellent covers of "Cissy Strut", "Blue Funk", and "Chitlins Con Carne" – plus a great original called "Shuckin N Jivin". This reissue also includes a cover of "Them Changes" that wasn't on the original release, which is a very cool bonus, and which sounds very hard and funky! The LP's filled with hard drum breaks, great jazzy solos, and lots of very cool funky grooves. Even if you think you've already got too many obscure jazz funk albums, don't pass this one up! It's a totally great addition to any collection, and even though we didn't know it until we got this reissue, we've been playing it non-stop since we got it!

In November 2018, Jeff Tweedy (singer and guitarist of the legendary band Wilco) released 'WARM' to much critical acclaim. 'WARMER' was recorded during the same studio sessions, and this release features both albums. Tweedy himself comments: 'At some point I separated the songs from the 'WARM/WARMER' session into two records with individual character, but still tried to keep the overall tone and texture of the combined session consistent. In a lot of ways these two records could have been released as a double LP'. Jeffrey Scot Tweedy is an American songwriter, musician, author, and record producer best known as the singer and guitarist of the band Wilco.

Enigmatic dance-pop project Mono Mind created by Per Gessle is based in Sweden, but features input from collaborators based around the world. Initial single "Sugar Rush" was briefly made available in 2016, but the project made its formal debut with "Save a Place" in 2017. While the group was presented with collage-like portrait graphics and pseudonymous members, the song featured vocals by Helena Josefsson and Roxette's Per Gessle, and publishing information revealed that David Guetta co-wrote the song. Following its release in July of 2017, "Save Me a Place" began picking up airplay, and climbed up the Billboard Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart.

Recorded in the UK in late 1971, First Album was a fine addition to the small but burgeoning British country rock scene that encompassed the likes of Matthews Southern Comfort, Quiver, Help Yourself, and Brinsley Schwarz. Roger's band on this album features some of the finest musicians of the era, including Glenn Campbell, fresh out of Juicy Lucy (and formerly of The Misunderstood), drummer Rod Coombes, sax player Chris Mercer and bassist De Lisle Harper. Harper, who has played with everyone from Gass and Bond & Brown to the Strawbs and Whitesnake also did the atmospheric brass, string and woodwind arrangements. Ex-Family man John Weider was present on fiddle and guitar, whilst drum duties were shared additionally by Kokomo's Terry Stannard and the Greaseband's ever reliable Bruce Rowlands. The late Tommy Eyre handled most of the keyboard chores. This is the first time this album has ever been released on CD. This issue boasts an additional four bonus tracks, which were all recorded a year after the original LP. The accompanying 12 page booklet includes comprehensive liner notes and full lyrics to every track.

Blues and roots singer and songwriter Sena Ehrhardt fronted a fresh new band and worked with a new producer, David Z., for Live My Life, her third album, and third for Blind Pig Records, but her approach, which is a varied mix of blues, blues-rock, soulful R&B, funk, and a touch of reggae, remains the same, which is a good thing. Her singing, which can range from sultry to gritty and back again, is as solid as always, showing why she is one of the brightest lights on the contemporary blues scene.

After their critically-acclaimed recording of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, the Czech Philharmonic and Semyon Bychkov continue their Pentatone Mahler cycle with a rendition of the composer’s Fifth. The Fifth Symphony marks an important turning point in Mahler’s symphonic output, away from the prominence of vocal movements in his previous symphonies. And whereas the Fifth seems to follow a teleology from darkness to light like its predecessors, the trajectory is much less straightforward, and full of enigmatic turns. Bychkov’s exceptional eye for detail and pacing make him an ideal guide through this work, while the Czech Philharmonic is capable of letting all the colours of Mahler’s score shine.

While Ivo Pogorelich established his reputation performing mainly Romantic repertoire, his few forays into the Baroque reveal him to be an equally engaging- if not eccentric musician here as well. In quicker movements, such as the opening Preludes of the English Suites for instance Pogorelich's rhythmic control and contrapuntal clarity are simply amazing. Slower movements likewise are handled with remarkable intensity and delicacy. Pogorelich's performances of four Scarlatti sonatas concluding the program as well are wonderfully animated and knowing.

As a unit, this must be one of the best piano trios ever, and certainly as instantly recognisable as any of its great predecessors. Charlap’s touch on the keyboard is light, almost stealthy, even when playing full chords, but always firm, clear and beautifully articulated. With the spirited support of bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (famously unrelated), the total effect is just perfect. As always, Charlap’s playing provides convincing proof that it is still possible to create fresh but pertinent treatments of well-known standard songs. The son of a songwriter and a singer, he has an instinctive feel for the idiom. His versions here of I’ll Remember April and A Sleepin’ Bee are masterly.

The Andrews Sisters were an American close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras. The group consisted of three sisters: contralto LaVerne Sophia, soprano Maxene Anglyn, and mezzo-soprano Patricia Marie "Patty". The sisters have sold an estimated 90 million records. Their 1941 hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" can be considered an early example of rhythm and blues or jump blues. Other songs closely associated with the Andrews Sisters include their first major hit, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön (Means That You're Grand)" (1937), "Beer Barrel Polka (Roll Out the Barrel)" (1939), "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar" (1940), "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else but Me)" (1942), and "Rum and Coca Cola" (1945), which helped introduce American audiences to calypso.

Symphony No. 1 in D minor for Large Orchestra and American Rhapsody. Dohnányi’s First Symphony was written just three years or so after the First Piano Concerto and here we are beginning to be aware of a more individual style developing. He scores the orchestra adroitly. Unlike the First Piano Concerto it is less derivative; although, like that work, it is portentous and intense and is a marathon indulgence, sprawling over almost an hour. It begins in the manner of Bruckner and its opening movement spreads over a glut of moods from no-nonsense harshness and martial heroics through eerie and mysterious stuff to intimate sentimentality visiting folk material on the way and indulging in fist-shaking bombast towards its end.
