There is plenty of diversity on this prime Dave Frishberg set. Four songs (including vocal versions of "Truckin'" and "&The Underdog") match Frishberg's piano with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, tenor saxophonist Al Cohn, bassist Jim Hughart, and drummer Nick Ceroli. Frishberg takes "That Old Feeling," "You're a Lucky Guy" (which he sings), and "Cheerful Little Earful" as piano solos, and there are also three wonderful duets with Cohn. Only two of the ten songs were written by Frishberg, so the emphasis is on his talents as a pianist and singer rather than as a lyricist. Recommended.

With its varying short-lived phases, King Crimson is well suited to the box set treatment, and overall, Frame by Frame: The Essential King Crimson doesn't disappoint. At four discs, it's perhaps a little hefty to serve as a comprehensive introduction for newcomers, even though it could work very well in that context; in the end, the box is more of a close-to-definitive package for fans who fall somewhere in between the realms of casual and devoted. The first three discs do an excellent job of summarizing King Crimson's extremely distinct prime-period lineups: the first disc concentrates on the often jazzy symphonic rock of 1969-1971 (including almost the entirety of In the Court of the Crimson King), the second covers the heavy, experimental soundscapes of 1973-1974, and the third features the off-kilter, new wave-influenced prog pop of 1981-1984. The fourth disc is a career-spanning sampler of live Crimson, and although the varying sound quality and musical styles make it a less cohesive listen than the other discs, it does give an excellent idea of the various lineups' extraordinary performing range.

Some of the most distinctive female voices of the 1960s were captured on tape in New York studios: Arlene Smith of the Chantels, Dionne Warwick, Cissy Houston, Ronnie Spector – you know instantly when you're hearing these women. Add to that list Brenda Reid, whose great soul shout fronted the Exciters. To be a singer was the girlhood dream of Lillian Walker. In her teens she started several groups with her friend Sylvia Wilbur, but the other girls involved just didn't last the course. Then Brenda came along. With the addition of Carol Johnson and Herb Rooney the group was complete. After a 45 as the Masterettes in early 1962, Sylvia left and the group came to the attention of Leiber & Stoller, who renamed the group the Exciters. Their first single – the Bert Berns-written ‘Tell Him’, released on United Artists – became a huge hit, but their follow-ups didn't achieve the same success, not even their fabulous original version of ‘Do-Wah-Diddy’.

Better make room on the bookshelf, baby, 'cause nearly all of these 160 tracks have never been on CD, and a bunch of 'em never even on vinyl! Here are the original film versions of such Sinatra standards as Night and Day; All or Nothing at All; Time After Time; New York, New York; On the Town; All of Me; From Here to Eternity; Three Coins in the Fountain; Someone to Watch over Me; and more, many (because of the film studios' recording innovations) in stereo for the first time. And the rarities are juicy-a 1947 radio interview for The Kissing Bandit ; 1951 promos/spots for Meet Danny Wilson ; a 1953 Sinatra/Donna Reed interview for From Here to Eternity ; Lucky Strike promo spots, and more! The packaging is of keepsake quality. Monumental!

Following his second covers album, Kojak Variety, Elvis Costello set out to assemble a collection of songs he had written for other artists but never recorded himself – sort of a reverse covers album. As it turned out, that idea was only used as a launching pad – the resulting album, All This Useless Beauty, is a mixture of nine old and three new songs. Given its origins, it's surprising that the record holds together as well as it does. The main strength of All This Useless Beauty is the quality of the individual songs – each song can stand on its own as an individual entity, as the music is as sharp as the lyrics. Although the music is certainly eclectic, it's accessible, which wasn't the case with Mighty Like a Rose. Furthermore, the production is more textured and punchier than Mitchell Froom's botched job on Brutal Youth. All This Useless Beauty doesn't quite add up to a major statement, but the simple pleasures it offers makes it one of the more rewarding records of the latter part of Costello's career.

Digitally remastered two CD set containing a pair of albums from the blues great. From 1977 and 1978 come blues guitarist Buchanan's last albums for Polydor/Atlantic. Musicians featured on these recordings include Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn and Jan Hammer. After these recordings, Buchanan didn't go into a studio until 1988 when Alligator Records convinced him to start recording again. Buchanan's demons got him arrested in August 1988 and he was found hanged in jail, a sad end for a talented musician who was only 48 years of age. Leroy "Roy" Buchanan was an American guitarist and blues musician. A pioneer of the Telecaster sound, Buchanan worked as a sideman and as a solo artist, with two gold albums early in his career and two later solo albums that made it to the Billboard chart. He never achieved stardom, but he is still considered a highly influential guitar player. Guitar Player praised him as having one of the "50 Greatest Tones of All Time."

Nights from the Alhambra chronicles ethereal Canadian Celtic/folk/worldbeat artist Loreena McKennitt's 2006 tour in support of her Ancient Muse album. Recorded in September in the Palace of Charles V at the Alhambra, a southern Spanish fortress on the eastern border of the city of Granada built by the Moors, McKennitt employed a 12-piece band that included hurdy-gurdy, oud, uilleann pipes, kanoun, strings, and multiple percussion players. Though there is an emphasis on works from her most recent release, the singer/composer/harpist covers a wide breadth of material from 1985's Elemental ("She Moved Through the Fair") to 1991's acclaimed Visit ("All Souls Night," "Lady of Shalott") and beyond. As with all of her studio recordings, the sound quality is exquisite, making this – her third live collection – the best yet.

The man who popularized wordless vocal choruses and light orchestral accompaniment on a mix of popular standards and contemporary hits of the 1960s, Ray Conniff was a trombone player for Bunny Berigan's Orchestra and Bob Crosby's Bobcats before being hired as an arranger by Mitch Miller for Columbia Records in 1954. After he wrote the charts for several sizeable Columbia hits during the mid-'50s, Conniff became a solo artist as well, applying his arranging techniques to instrumental easy listening for the booming adult album market.

This is a very different musical interpretation of Psalm 51 than we saw last week in Allegri’s Miserere. In Allegri’s composition the intensity of the soaring, unaccompanied voices lead us to contemplation of the Divine Mercy of God in Heaven. Here the urgent, dramatic orchestration pulls us down into King David’s turbulent emotions as he comes to acknowledge his sinfulness and his need for God’s mercy. This clip is only the first part of a much longer composition, and contains only the first line of the Psalm: Miserere mei, Domine, secundam misericordiam tuam, “Have mercy on me, Lord, according to your compassion”. As the focus of the Psalm moves from David’s sinfulness to the abundance of God’s mercy, the music in the later parts of the piece changes with it.

Diamond Dogs is the eighth studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released on 24 May 1974 by RCA Records. Thematically, it was a marriage of the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell and Bowie's own glam-tinged vision of a post-apocalyptic world. Bowie had wanted to make a theatrical production of Orwell's book and began writing material after completing sessions for his 1973 album Pin Ups, but the author's estate denied the rights. The songs wound up on the second half of Diamond Dogs instead where, as the titles indicated, the Nineteen Eighty-Four theme was prominent. The album is ranked number 995 in All-Time Top 1000 Albums (3rd. edition, 2000) and number 447 in NME's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Elena Tonra isn't a keen swimmer, but oceans pervade 'Stereo Mind Game'. It's a matter of distance. Daughter's third record, the band's first studio album for seven years, grapples with what it means to be separated, from loved ones and too from yourself. Daughter - the trio comprising Tonra, Igor Haefeli and Remi Aguilella - formed in 2010. After releasing two studio albums, 'If You Leave' (2013) and 'Not to Disappear' (2016), and the video game soundtrack 'Music From Before the Storm' (2017), they chose to take some time off. But not before jamming together in Los Angeles, in between a support tour with The National and their first headline shows in South America. It was here that a new album started to germinate. Over the next couple of years - during which they worked on their own projects, including Tonra's solo record as Ex:Re - Daughter met occasionally to write together in studios in London, Portland and in San Diego, where Haefeli lived for six months in 2019. The record's central romantic figure is someone Tonra met out there when she visited from London. They shared a significant connection, but she knew the Atlantic lay between them.
