Black Paisley is a Swedish melodic rock band, founded in 2014. After having released various singles, their debut album "Late Bloomer" will be released independently on Jan. 31, 2017.

Placido Domingo has recorded the role of Otello commercially three times (maybe four–who’s counting?), and each has something to offer. This performance, opening night at La Scala, 1976, when Domingo had been singing the role only slightly more than a year, is the most thrilling and most vocally secure. If it lacks the ultimate in insights and tragedy, it’s hardly empty: even at this stage of his career, Domingo could find the intelligence in each role he sang. His growing impatience with Iago in Act 2, his barely-controlled rage with Desdemona in Act 3, and his towering sadness in the final scene are all the work of a superb singing actor. In addition, the sheer vocal splendor is something to revel in; rarely thereafter were the high notes so brilliant.

Chandos presents the premiere recording of the one-act opera 'A Feast in Time of Plague', Three Scherzos, Op.82 and three songs for solo voice and orchestra. César Cui is the least-known member of the group of five Russian nationalist composers (with Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky and Borodin) who together became known as 'The Mighty Handful'. He was considered to be the most dramatic of these composers. His music is highly tuneful and approachable, full of the colour we expect from the Russian romantic tradition.

The seventh album by Lucas and Arthur Jussen at Deutsche Grammophon presents music for two pianos by Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Arensky. 'It's like driving a few BMWs', remarked conductor Michael Schønwandt after conducting Dutch brothers Lucas (26) and Arthur Jussen (22). Despite their young age, they have been part of the international concert world for years and are praised by both the press and the public. Not only did their albums have received platinum and gold status, they won several Edison Klassiesek Audience Awards, among others. With the album, the long-planned project to record an album with a beautiful, powerful and technically demanding Russian repertoire is now coming true.

All three of the Steve Reich string quartets here were composed for the Kronos Quartet, which has been strongly identified with them. However, several things may be said in favor of this 2023 release by the Mivos Quartet. The first and most important is that this is the first recording of all three Reich quartets together, and it is quite interesting to hear them this way. Reich said for many years that he could not imagine himself writing a string quartet, and the repetition-based structure of his music seemed incompatible with the medium. His solution, precipitated by his juxtaposition of his own childhood train journeys with recollections of Holocaust survivors on trains to concentration camps, was applied first in Different Trains (1988); the string quartet here acts as a discrete unit, introducing and commenting on taped voices.

This Dutch compilation approaches the Moody Blues' career from an unusual angle. Although scoring three Top Ten hits in its native U.K. and another three in the U.S., the group is known primarily as an album act, having reached the Top Ten of the LP charts six times in Britain and eight times in America. During their initial period, 1964-1966, when Denny Laine was the lead singer, they were a singles band (as all rock & roll performers were then), but they had only one hit single, "Go Now!" Their real success came with the release of the album Days of Future Passed in 1967. By compiling all (well, almost all) of their A-side singles, the makers of this two-CD set have created not only a greatest hits collection, but also a rarities album. That is because, of the Moody Blues' first ten U.K. singles, only "Go Now!" and both sides of their sixth single, "Stop!"/"Bye Bye Bird," were included on their 1965 debut album. A 1993 CD reissue of that album added the singles "Steal Your Heart Away" and "I Don't Want to Go on Without You," included here, but that still leaves six tracks included on the present collection – "Everyday," "Boulevard de la Madeleine," "This Is My House (But Nobody Calls)," "Life's Not Life," "Fly Me High," and "Love and Beauty" – that have not been much heard since their release as British singles in 1965-1967.

Trevor Pinnock is the founder and former conductor of the English Concert, one of Europe's leading period instrumental and vocal ensembles. He began his career as a harpsichordist and has returned to that field during the latter part of his career.

Born in 1991, Daniil Trifonov is a Russian pianist who began playing the piano at the age of five. As a teen, he was active in competitions, participating in the International Scriabin Competition and the International Piano Competition of San Marino. In 2010, he won third prize in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and won the Special Prize of Polish Radio for Best Mazurka performance. He placed first in 2011 at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, and won the Pnina Salzman Prize for the Best Performer of a Chopin Piece, among other awards. Soon after winning the Rubinstein Competition, Trifonov won the grand prize of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, which led to his recording Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra. In the wake of so many youthful achievements, he has also received scholarships, including the Scriabin Scholarship, the "Young Talents of Russia" Foundation Scholarship, and the Guzik Foundation Award.

In 1985, Philip Glass composed a "dance-theater" work based on Edgar Allan Poe's 1841 short story A Descent into the Maelstrom as one of the last pieces written for the original Philip Glass Ensemble. A few years ago, Norwegian filmmaker Jan Vardoen decided to make a film about the Poe story, which is set in the Arctic Circle near the Lofoten archipelago in northern Norway. At the same time, Vardoen discovered the Philip Glass Ensemble's recording of the work. As part of his film, Vardoen conscripted the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra and arranger Alexander Waaktar to adapt the music for full symphony orchestra, voice and synthesizer. The result is a dramatic new interpretation of a little known major Philip Glass work. This release from Orange Mountain Music marks the first recording of this dynamic piece in orchestral form.

Ghana has been considered a land of storytellers for many centuries. But this great tradition does not necessarily have to be continued with words or the voice. Peter Somuah spins storytelling with his instrument: as a young trumpet player, he embarks on a fascinating search for identity between the highlife of his homeland, his idol Miles Davis and the cosmopolitan musical language of his new home Holland. This journey is his "Letter To The Universe".

The music of the French native, Valencia-based cellist Matthieu Saglio combines influences from all around the Mediterranean, from North Africa to Southern Europe. He first gained international recognition as a member of the trio "NES" and the album "Ahlam" in 2018. Soon after Saglios' solo debut "El Camino de los Vientos" earned huge success, especially in the digital world, and has been played over seven million times on Spotify alone.

James are an English rock band from Manchester, who were formed in 1982 and enjoyed popularity throughout the 1990s. The band's best-known singles include "Come Home"; "Sit Down"; "She's a Star" and "Laid", which also became a hit on American college radio. Following the departure of lead singer Tim Booth in 2001, the band became inactive, but reunited in January 2007 and has gone on to produce a further six albums. James's hit single "Come Home" was voted the greatest ever Manchester anthem in a radio poll. Live performance has continually remained a central part of the band's output. As of 2010, the band had sold more than 25 million albums worldwide. The 1987 film Three O'Clock High is a favorite among Gen X, while the soundtrack from score legends Tangerine Dream (Risky Business, Firestarter) remains as strong as anything they created in their 1980s heyday. 35th Anniversary reissue includes an insert of the original film poster drawn by legendary artist Drew Struzan (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner) and features new liner notes and a printer inner sleeve.

Like Paavo Berglund’s Sibelius symphony recordings, also with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, these Brahms performances inject a certain novelty that will be appreciated especially by the listener who has wearied of them due to excessive repetition. While these are not radically desiccated renditions in the manner of Chailly or Harnoncourt, the COE’s smaller-scaled string body does require a bit of time at first for your ear to adjust to the thinner timbres. But the reward is a harvest of inner detail, much of it barely audible in full-size orchestral performances (but well captured by Ondine’s vivid recordings), which continually surprises and delights.
