Of course, newcomers to the legendary finger-style wizardry of Leo Kottke should pick up the guitarist's 1969 debut, 6 & 12 String Guitar, before they consider anything else. After listening to that masterpiece–on which Kottke plays lightning-fast instrumentals that sound like a cross between John Fahey and Bill Monroe–you can't help wanting to hear his other stuff. And Anthology is a great launching point, covering Kottke's music from 6 & 12 String through to 1983. Whereas Fahey, Kottke's finger-style forefather, ventured into weird tape loops and effects as his career progressed (and distanced his personality from his playing), Kottke did the opposite. His playing has slowed down, but Kottke now fashions himself as a singer/songwriter. And on songs like "Tiny Island" or "Julie's House"–the latter a duet with Emmylou Harris–he sounds heartfelt and human, like a more sincere version of Loudon Wainwright III. A few essential cuts are missing here, mostly from the first half of his career, and there are a few oddball tracks–Kottke warbling through "Eight Miles High" is one–but get used to it: every platter the guitarist has released seems to have a dud or three. Who knows what the next path would have been had Ian Curtis not chosen his end? But steer away from the rereading of his every lyric after that date; treat Closer as what everyone else thought it was at first – simply the next album – and Joy Division's power just seems to have grown. Martin Hannett was still producing, but seems to have taken as many chances as the band itself throughout – differing mixes, differing atmospheres, new twists and turns define the entirety of Closer, songs suddenly returned in chopped-up, crumpled form, ending on hiss and random notes.

Fogerty’s Factory is a newly recorded album of stripped back tracks from legendary singer, songwriter and guitarist JOHN FOGERTY. All tracks were recorded during the lockdown of summer 2020 by John and his family; including his sons Shane and Tyler (who together are the band Hearty Har) and daughter Kelsy. These versions of classic tunes have featured on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert and Sirius XM, with this being the first time any of them are available on CD and LP. The first track, “CENTERFIELD,” was recorded on the Field at Dodger Stadium to celebrate John’s 75th Birthday.

The solo pieces by Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe presented here were written around 1690 and are part of a manuscript included in the archives of the municipal library in Tournus, Burgundy. Hence its name: the ‘Tournus Manuscript’. The first modern edition of the manuscript was published in 2013 by Edition Güntersberg, prepared by Herausgegeben von Günter and Leonore von Zadow. Until then, only a facsimile edition by Minkoff had been published, one which is long since out of print. I came across the pieces quite by accident while searching through the music shops that populate the Rue de Rome in Paris.

Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, The Royal Sessions sees classic rocker Paul Rodgers – first known as the lead singer of Free, best-known as the frontman of Bad Company and later a Freddie Mercury substitute in Queen – paying tribute to his beloved '60s Southern soul. Rodgers set up camp in Memphis and surrounded himself with many veteran Memphis soul musicians, cutting a collection of deep soul covers – primarily tunes released or recorded at Stax, sometimes songs that were made at Muscle Shoals – that remain faithful to the spirit and arrangements of the originals.
