While not many on this side of the pond have noticed, Lloyd Cole, that smart, blackly humorous and self-deprecating songwriter has been assembling a nice catalog, chock-full of fine recordings. Luckily for us, his association with One Little Indian makes provisions for American releases for those who do understand that Cole is one of the most unique, tender, witty and biting songwriters out there, and he also writes a hell of a love song. Anti Depressant is the great double edge in Cole's catalog. In Cole's thinking, while it's true that an anti-depressant can make you feel better, the simple fact that you need one makes clear the appearance of depression. Many of these songs have that double edge in them.

Whatcha Gonna Do? is an album by British blues rock musician Peter Green, who was the founder of Fleetwood Mac and a member from 1967–70. Released in 1981, this was his fourth solo album, the third in his 'middle period' of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and his last for PVK Records. All the tracks on the album were written by Green's brother Mike.

Protest as she may – and she does, claiming in the liner notes that #1's is "not a greatest hits album! It's too soon, I haven't been recording long enough for that!" – it's hard to view #1's, Mariah Carey's first compilation, as anything other than a greatest-hits album. Carey was fortunate enough to have nearly every single she released top the pop charts. Between 1990's "Vision of Love" and 1998's "My All," all but four commercially released singles ("Anytime You Need a Friend," "Can't Let Go," "Make It Happen," "Without You") hit number one, with only a handful of radio-only singles ("Butterfly," "Breakdown") making the airwaves, not the charts.

If you think of funk and sax, Candy Dulfer is one of the first names that comes to mind. Her breakthrough came in the late 80s and early 90s, initially with her 1989 single Lily Was Here from the soundtrack of the film of the same name, which she recorded with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, reaching number 6 in the UK singles charts. Ever since then, this charming Dutch lady has been an ambassador for funk all over the world. And having worked with the greats such as Prince, Van Morrison, Maceo Parker, Dave Stewart, Beyoncé, Pink Floyd, Aretha Franklin, Jimmy Cliff, Tower Of Power, Angie Stone and Alan Parsons, she can quite rightly call herself a star. On the album Crazy, Candy Dulfer once again shows her creativity and ambition as a musician.

The first major-label release of Mutantes material was this 1999 compilation, put together by longtime Brazilian fan David Byrne through his Luaka Bop label. Including tracks from the band's late-'60s and early-'70s LPs (available separately through Omplatten), Everything Is Possible is a solid collection that only includes 14 tracks but does spotlight Mutantes' tremendous diversity. From the birth of tropicalia on their first album from 1968 (wildly experimental pop songs like "Panis Et Circenses" and "Bat Macumba") plus their later, more straight-ahead incarnations, the album gives beginners a solid place to start. The inclusion of both versions of the rather tiresome Janis Joplin retread "Baby" is a bit regrettable, but all around, Everything Is Possible gets it right better than could be hoped from a domestic compilation.

Commissioned in 1965 by the Dean of Chichester, Bernstein’s colourful Chichester Psalms is one of the composer’s most successful and accessible works on religious texts, contrasting spiritual austerity with impulsive rhythms in a contemplation of peace. The composer fashioned his Oscar-nominated score to the 1954 movie On the Waterfront into a symphonic suite, skilfully capturing the oppression of the New York dockyards in the ’50s. The Three Dance Episodes were extracted from the popular On The Town, Bernstein's first successful foray into musical theatre.

Sir Charles Mackerras is one of the world's finest conductors. It's probably safe to say that he has never made a bad record, and his performances of music of the classical period, in particular, are always full of sparkle and excitement. Here, aided by some very polished and lively playing from the Orchestra of St. Luke's, he turns in super performances of two of Haydn's greatest symphonies. The Clock takes its name from the slow movement, which features a ticktock accompaniment to a graceful tune that rapidly evolves into one of Haydn's wittiest inspirations. The London symphony was the last of the twelve that Haydn wrote for his two visits to the English capital in the 1790s. This is wonderful music with great sound.

Indigo is the sixth colour in the rainbow and stands for truth; to live in harmony with oneself and everything as well as for intuition, inspiration and imagination. Thus, the colour symbolises the expansion of consciousness, holistic thinking and recognising connections between inner and outer influences. The trumpeter Georges Soyka therefore chose it as the title for his recording.

Technological agitation. Narcissism fatigue. A galaxy of isolation. These are the new norms keeping Weyes Blood (aka Natalie Mering) up at night and the themes at the heart of her 2022 release, 'And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow'. The celestial-influenced folk album is her follow-up to the acclaimed 'Titanic Rising'. (Pitchfork, NPR, and The Guardian admiringly named it one of 2019's best.) While 'Titanic Rising' was an observation of doom to come, 'And In the Darkness, Hearts Aglow' is about being in the thick of it: a search for an escape hatch to liberate us from algorithms and ideological chaos.

One of the few surviving links to the pre-Soul/R&B era, Bobby Womack, discovered as a teenager singing gospel music by the late Sam Cooke - nowadays enjoys full-blown "Living Legend" status. Blessed with one of the warmest, most readily-identifiable voices in Soul music, he carved out his reputation with a series of classic albums and singles in the early 70s. This 2 disc deluxe digibook set package is built around his iconic, award-winning original soundtrack to Across 110th Street (1972), the critically-acclaimed - albeit violent, bloodthirsty and disturbing - Blaxploitation movie. Perhaps Womack's most celebrated album, this compelling OST remains the most important soundtrack of the genre, the powerful title song later featuring heavily in both Quentin Tarantino's 1997 homage to Blaxploitation, 'Jackie Brown', and Ridley Scott's 2007 opus, 'American Gangster'. The bonus disc features Womack's two subsequent LPs, Facts Of Life (1973) and Looking For A Love Again (1974). These three LPs include some of Womack's biggest hit singles, notably 'Across 110th Street', 'Nobody Wants You When You're Down And Out', the million-selling 'Lookin' For A Love', and 'You're Welcome, Stop On By'. Also featured are a number of Bobby's famously eccentric, unlikely cover versions, including Dylan's 'All Along The Watchtower', the Goffin & King classic, 'A Natural Man', and Bacharach & David's 'The Look Of Love'.

" Nærmere " is the first album by Norwegian artist Ane Brun with all songs in Norwegian, which was released on 11/11/22! 🇳🇴 Here are collected songs from the entire career. Some of them have been re-recorded like "Dirty Windshield", "Still Waters" and "Undertow" and some have just new vocals with Norwegian lyrics like "Hanging" and "Honey". The album also includes the song "Du gråter så store tåra", released in 2011, as well as "Virvelvind", written for Amnesty in 2012.

Founded in 1906, Les Petits Chanteurs à la Croix des Bois (Little Singers of the Wooden Cross) are renowned as one of the world's most established children's choirs. Founded by Paul Berthier and Pierre Martin, two students on vacation at l'Abbeye de Tamie, the Paris-based traveling choir broke tradition with its lack of affiliation to a particular parish or cathedral. Directed by Father Fernand Maillet, they soon developed an international presence thanks to performances at the Vatican and an appearance in the 1945 film La Cage aux Rossignols, and continued to remain active throughout the 20th century, with singer/songwriter Matthieu Chédid, Les Prêtres' Charles Troesch, and Olympic rowing champion Adrien Hardy among some of their famous former members. By its centenary year, which was celebrated by a France2 show featuring duets with the likes of Tina Arena, Lara Fabian, and Nolwenn Leroy, the choir school had developed into a full-time educational institution, combining regular studies with a global touring schedule.

Kati Raitinen and Bengt Forsberg describe their approach to the three works on this CD as a "journey of discovery". Literally they say: "On this musical journey pleasure was the dominant feeling, together with a certain wonder that these compositions are not better known." The cello sonatas of Emilie Maria von Bach (1896-1978), Henriëtte Bosmans (1895 -1952) and Rita Strohl (1865-1941) are also unknown among connoisseurs of cello literature - but wrongly so, as this recording shows. This is also how the title of this CD should be understood: A TRIBUTE TO CURIOSITY - a homage to the thirst for knowledge.

Lutenist, singer and composer Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, presided for a short while over one of the most cultivated European courts. Sirinu, with imaginative deployment of instrumental colour, performs the songs, consort music and arrangements attributed to Henry Tudor, including the well-known ‘Pastyme with good companye’. A fascinating disc.
