Leonard Bernstein recorded nearly all of Brahms's orchestral works on film with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to honour the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth in 1983. Today, the cycle is considered a landmark in the interpretation of Brahms's music. Here are four masterpieces: the two concert overtures, the brilliant "Haydn" Variations, and the delightfully Haydnesque A major Serenade.

BAFTA award winning actor Matt Berry returns with Television Themes. Inspired by his youth, it's a collection of TV theme tunes that have not only influenced Berry but undergone a fascinating and unique metamorphosis under his musical stewardship. Television Themes was recorded on his own and with his regular band The Maypoles in his newly built studio. It includes favorites from the '60s, '70s, and '80s such as Are You Being Served? and Rainbow alongside lesser known themes from Picture Box and Wildtrak amidst those that transcend the decades, Doctor Who and Top Of The Pops. Combining his love of music production and his passion for the 'signature tune', Television Themes sees Berry enhance his musical reputation following the success of his previous releases encapsulating Berry's formative years as a viewer and paired with his boundless appetite for music.

On one level, A Character of Quiet showcases music by two composers separated by two centuries—three mesmerizing études by Philip Glass, followed by one of the piano’s greatest works, Schubert’s final sonata, D 960. But there’s more at play here. Performing from her home, Simone Dinnerstein explores the ties that bound all of us during 2020’s lockdown by discovering links between these two apparently contrasting composers. The gently insistent figuration that underpins Glass’ “Etude No. 2,” for instance, forms the backbone of Schubert’s glorious “Andante,” a movement that thrives as much in its expectant silences as in its transcendent sounds. But zoom out, and you’ll simply hear two composers expressively yet tentatively finding a way forward. A beautiful meditation on human vulnerability.

Aside from the experimental side project Lumpy Gravy, Hot Rats was the first album Frank Zappa recorded as a solo artist sans the Mothers, though he continued to employ previous musical collaborators, most notably multi-instrumentalist Ian Underwood. Other than another side project – the doo wop tribute Cruising With Ruben and the Jets – Hot Rats was also the first time Zappa focused his efforts in one general area, namely jazz-rock…

Rough Diamonds is the sixth studio album by rock band Bad Company. The album was released in August 1982. Rough Diamonds, like its predecessor, Desolation Angels, was recorded at Ridge Farm Studio in Surrey, England in March and April 1981 and engineered by Max Norman (famed for his work with Ozzy Osbourne)…

Heaven and the Sea isn't quite as dance-oriented as Pete Shelley's first two albums, nor does it have the nervous pop energy that was a hallmark of those records and his work with the Buzzcocks. Instead, it's a layered and textured release, given a polished, mature production which ironically only emphasizes the lack of notable songs. There are a handful of relatively strong cuts on the record, but even they don't match the high points of its two predecessors.

In 1986, after almost 30 years on Columbia Records, Country music legend Johnny Cash released his first album on Mercury Records – Class Of ’55, in collaboration with fellow Sun Records alumni Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. Seven years later, his last recording before signing with Rick Rubin’s American Recordings would be another collaboration, “The Wanderer”, with U2. In the years that span those recordings, Johnny Cash released a total of six albums for Mercury Records. The highlights of that output are presented here, on the brand new compilation Easy Rider: The Best Of The Mercury Recordings. Now remastered for the very first time, using the original Mercury master tapes, the 24 tracks that make up the set feature Cash’s updated interpretations of classics songs “Get Rhythm” and “Tennessee Flat Top Box”, the rare B-side “Veteran’s Day”, Elvis Costello’s “The Big Light”, and his collaboration with U2, “The Wanderer”.
