Extending the concept initiated with his critically-acclaimed Jazz Composer’s Orchestra Update album, described by Down Beat as “pretty fantastic”, Michael Mantler radically reworks music from several phases of his career. On Coda he shapes favourite pieces – a personal “best-of” - into new musical suites, now played by an orchestra comprised of both jazz and classical players. Source material is drawn from the albums 13 and 3/4, Cerco un paese innocente, Alien, Folly Seeing All This, For Two and Hide And Seek. Coda was recorded at Vienna’s Porgy & Bess Studio in September 2019, and mixed at Studios La Buissonne in the South of France.

QOPH plays a psychedelic brand of music and there is there is some variety here including an Anekdoten feel at times. The guitarist does his Fripp imitation quite well as we get lots of angular melodies. The vocalist has a strong voice, and he sings in English. QOPH by the way is the nineteenth letter in the Hebrew alphabet. There are several guests playing a variety of instruments including moog, theremin, clavinet and percussion.There is also mellotron on a couple of tracks courtesy of Nicklas Barker from Anekdoten.

As with most of Haydn’s masses, the Missa Cellensis is more well known by its alias,“Cäcilienmesse” (Cecilia Mass), rather than by its original name. Joseph Haydn began work on the mass in 1766, when he assumed the position as Music Director for the princely Court of Esterházy. With its unusually large orchestra and a duration of almost one hour, this composition is the longest and most extensive of Haydn’s masses. Haydn followed the traditional structure by setting the parts of the Ordinary in individual movements, in which the text is interpreted through the use of variety and contrast in scoring and compositional technique. For quite some time now, Jos van Immerseel and his Ensemble Anima Eterna have enjoyed an outstanding reputation for presenting their unique and special type of historical performance practice: For the present recording they employed Vienna wind instruments and the string instruments are modeled on instruments from the Viennese classical period.
