Following his acclaimed recording of solo sonatas by contemporaries of Beethoven, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet releases the complete Beethoven Piano Concertos as pianist and director with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. Directing the Swedish Chamber Orchestra from the keyboard, Jean-Efflam writes: ​"For the pianist there is also the delight of appearing face to face with the entire orchestra, in direct visual communication, the musicians perhaps more likely to take personal initiatives, thus multiplying the pleasure of a genuine participation, dialogue, and musical exchange". The cadenzas used in this recording are all Beethoven’s, from the set that he wrote out in 1809, and so are contemporaneous with the Fifth Concerto. The recording includes the Quintet for Piano and Winds, Op. 16.

Apparently Couperin's music is extraordinarily difficult to perform; artists heard here are recognized as masters of the repertory. Mieneke van der Velden plays a 1617 viola da gamba as well as another instrument from 1768; Glen Wilson plays a contemporary harpsichord copied after a French instrument dating to the mid-18th century. They produce a rich sound which doubtless will appeal strongly to those interested in this repertory. On this recording they are larger than life, placed primarily in front of the listener but with much reflected sound as well.

Don't be put off by the precious title; this is a delightful collection of 17th-century English music built around the delicate viola da gamba skills of the Dutch virtuoso Mieneke van der Velden. When ‘Willie’ Rice Miller, aka Sonny Boy Williamson, made these intimate, casual recordings in 1963, he was already (probably) 66 years old. Most of his long career was over; only two years later he would die in his little apartment in Helena, Arkansas. He was recognized as a giant throughout the blues world as a harmonica player, vocalist, songwriter, prolific recording artist, live performer and wildly colorful personality. Starting in 1951 and continuing into the ‘60s, Sonny Boy made some of the most influential blues records of all time.
