Eighteenth-century Europe was home to an infinity of musical styles. The fascination of composers with developments elsewhere led to a multitude of creative imitations and further transformations. Our recording is a sounding illustration of the results: a German embraces the French orchestral suite and an Italian is the driving force behind the new concerto form, only to inspire another German to other creative ventures.

Most people know Else Marie Pade as a pioneer in Danish electronic music. But under gloomy circumstances during the Second World War, Pade also wrote a number of humorous songs in swing and percussion style, which have now been reinterpreted by the duo Dybfølt and singer Kira Martini.

There has been a flurry of recording activity in recent years around British works for cello and piano, with the repertoire finally receiving the attention it deserves from artists, critics, and record labels alike. The work in this collection is a result of an occasional collaboration between myself, Leo Abrahams and Jon Hopkins. The two of them are gifted young player/composers whose work, like mine, is intimately connected to the possibilities and freedoms of electronic music. Over the last few years we've worked together several times, enjoying exploring the huge new sonic territories now available to musicians. Mostly the pieces on this album resulted not from 'composition' in the classical sense, but from improvisation.
