Renowned period hornist Anneke Scott returns to Resonus with a programme of works for horn that chart a fascinating and pivotal period in the development of the instrument and its repertoire in nineteenth-century France. Joined by pianist Steven Devine, this album, which also celebrates 200 years since the birth of Charles Gounod, features a selection of works composed for both natural and piston horns by Gounod, Meifred and Gallay, as well as a Gounod arrangement by François Brémond, all performed on original period horns and a grand piano by Érard.

Swan Lake is the first of the three great ballets that Tchaikovsky wrote, and arguably the most famous. The piece is mainly known in the shape it obtained in 1895, when it became a classic in the choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. That “imperial” version strayed from Tchaikovsky’s world premiere score, with several cuts, abridgements and displacements. This high definition recording presents the work as it was heard during the 1877 world premiere performance, highlighting the extraordinary symphonic qualities of Tchaikovsky's original conception.

In this new recording, Scherzi Musicali explores the fascinating world of Alessandro Scarlatti’s Arcadian cantatas: the six mostly unpublished cantatas selected here sublimate the affects of nymphs and shepherds far from their beloved. Both the arias and the recitatives are exceptionally beautiful, varied and colourful: the accomplished theatrical sense of these cantatas has stimulated the soprano Deborah Cachet, the baritone Nicolas Achten and the abundant instrumental forces that provide a setting for their voices to a passionate and captivating realisation, in which poetry, rhetoric, inventive ornamentation and opulence of sound reign supreme.

As a teacher, he became a musician by passion, self-taught, then introduced to wind instruments by Honoré Copé, Martinique clarinettist, invited to Conakry to train beginner musicians, then to musical theory by a North Korean teacher, Master Barry, as he calls them. Guineans, quickly integrates the different elements that made the originality and success of Guinean music and became in 1969 the conductor of Kaloum Star, the last big bang supported by Sékou Touré. The band is distinguished by its openness to jazz, Nigerian afro beat and Ghanaian high-life and introduces them to modernized Mandingo folklore.

And when you read this, it becomes clear that Black Roots are not about to be turned away from the path that they have chosen.

Two of the most popular romantic Russian piano works from the mid-1870s are heard on this new album from the celebrated Barry Douglas.

Rob Simonsen has had a thread in the fabric of some of the most noteworthy and prestigious films of the past decade. Also under his belt is the horror-comedy The Master Cleanse, Roland Emmerich's political drama Stonewall, and the Weinstein Company's Burnt starring Bradley Cooper, Uma Thurman and Sienna Miller. His work in television has included the Joss Whedon Fox drama Dollhouse and the CBS ratings juggernaut Blue bloods, led by Tom Selleck.

It's not enough that rising Spanish star Rosalía ingeniously blends traditional flamenco with contemporary pop on her second album she also gets a narrative based on medieval literature in there, too. Inspired by Flamenca, a 13th century book about a woman imprisoned by her jealous fiancé thought to be the first modern novel, each of the 11 songs on this collaboration with producer El Guincho (Pablo Díaz-Reixa) serves as a “chapter” of a running story about a doomed relationship.

Following her acclaimed recording of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in 2016 (Editor’s Choice, Gramophone), Xiayin Wang here completes the trio with No. 1 and the posthumously published No. 3, alongside Scriabin’s only concerto.

Flávia Dantas is a singer and a songwriter. She has this sweet and beautiful voice that pleases everybody everywhere. She released her first CD in 2012 (only with her own songs), which has a very Brazilian sonority, full of bossa and swing: music to hear and to dance. In addition to her authorial work, she sings the traditional repertoire of Bossa Nova and Samba, in many formations such as voice and guitar duet; quintet with voice, guitar, bass, drums and saxophones. Flávia also sings in a popular orchestra: The Carioca Orchestra of Samba. Her main references are Nara Leão, Joao Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Vinicius de Moraes, João Donato, Dorival Caymmi, etc.

The four-piece Los Angeles indie group Louden Swain makes music best described as a combo platter of classic, alternative and hard rock. That makes for a sound both loud and approachable, one that can blow your hair back even as it touches your heart.

The piano works of the Czech-born composer Antoine Reicha (1770–1836) – friend of Haydn and Beethoven, teacher of Berlioz, Liszt and Franck – is one of the best-kept secrets in music. He was an important influence on composers of the next generation, but apart from an innovative set of fugues his piano works have remained almost unknown since his own day. Encompassing Baroque practices as well as looking forward to the twentieth century, they are full of harmonic and other surprises that show this liveliest of minds at work. The massive variation-set on a French gavotte recorded here for the first time reveals a composer who tempers his learning with a vivid sense of humour.

Delving into a mix of Blues, Jazz, Country and R&B, the album is also inspired by recent trips to Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, with some New Orleans and gospel influence, some of which is a direct result from collaborations with Willie West (the Meters) and the Campbell Brothers. In this album, Jordan Officer wanted to tell meaningful stories that evoke strong personal feelings. The new songs for this album are recent compositions, direct, honest, songs based on his life, that showcase both his guitar skills and explosive side as well as a more delicate playing and use of space, with fun danceable grooves.

Causes are a four-piece indie-pop band who are based in the Netherlands. The English singer-songwriter Rupert Blackman moved from London to Utrecht. Looking for band members, in 2014 he posted a message on the bulletin board of the conservatory. He came into contact with guitarist Jan Schröder, drummer Simon Boeing-Messing and bassist Robert Pronk. Causes was born and then it went very fast: the band played at festivals like Pinkpop, Lowlands and Concert At Sea and frequently toured sold-out halls at home and abroad.
