German cellist Anja Lechner and Argentinean guitarist Pablo Márquez met in 2003 and have since explored the most diverse repertoire and modes of expression in their concerts. For their first duo album, a conceptual context is provided by the strong tradition of songs with guitar accompaniment prevalent in 19th century Vienna, as Lechner and Márquez play some of Schubert’s most beloved songs (including Die Nacht, Nacht und Träume and Der Leiermann), elegantly framing the album’s centrepiece: Schubert’s expansive ‘Arpeggione’ sonata.

In his second ECM appearance (following a critically-acclaimed duo recording with Markus Stockhausen) pianist Florian Weber leads a strong cast through a programme of his compositions and sketches. Whether paying tribute to mentor Lee Konitz on “Honestlee”, impressionistically conveying the glittering “Melody of a Waterfall” or generating impactful drama out of fragments of sound on “Butterfly Effect”, Weber continually draws fresh responses from his players.

Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings will release in November, the Bob Dylan box set that fans have really been waiting for. More Blood, More Tracks: The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 will be available as a six-CD set that includes “every surviving take” (including the complete New York sessions) from the 1974 studio recordings made by Bob Dylan which resulted in his 1975 classic Blood On The Tracks.

In the bins of diquaires there is a category World Music, but also recently World Jazz, World Rock, and now it will also be necessary to rely on World Folk Music, because the two members of Baton Bleu have resolutely chosen the folk acoustic turn as means of expression. Baton Bleu is Maria Laurent, who plays Mongolian lute, banjo, guitar, thumb piano, Glockenspiel, flute, old Mongolian and some other exotic instruments, but Baton Bleu is also Gautier Degandt, who also plays, in addition to the instruments already mentioned (yes …), bass, harmonica and tovshuur, a two-stringed lute.

At the end of March 2018, Steven Wilson played a sell-out three night residency at one of the world’s most iconic venues: London’s Royal Albert Hall. The three Albert Hall shows saw Steven and his virtuoso band present the songs from To The Bone and many more from a deep dive into his extensive back catalogue as part of visually and sonically immersive experience. There, brain-twisting visuals met expansive 4D sound, making this most traditional of English venues feel like it was hosting a very different kind of Prom – more communion than concert. Andrew Cyrille’s title Lebroba is a contraction of Leland, Brooklyn and Baltimore, birthplaces of the protagonists of an album bringing together three of creative music’s independent thinkers. Each of them made his first ECM appearance long ago: drummer Andrew Cyrille on Marion Brown’s Afternoon of a Georgia Faun (1970), trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith on his own classic Divine Love (1978), and guitarist Bill Frisell on Eberhard Weber’s Fluid Rustle (1979); these are, of course, players of enduring influence. Frisell contributed to Cyrille’s previous ECM disc The Declaration of Musical Independence, but Lebroba marks a first-time meeting for the guitarist and Wadada Leo Smith.

Hotly anticpated album from the acclaimed Australian duo. The album consists of two acts across seven movements that represent the different facets of the Dionysus myth and his cult and takes the musical form of an oratorio, which has informed both spiritual and secular pieces of music as far back in history as the early 16th century Two years in the making, Perry has amassed an array of folk instrumentation and as often heard on previous albums takes inspiration from across the world, tracks evolve less like songs more akin to fragments of the cohesive whole.

Mercury is the third solo album from multi-award winning Scottish singer-songwriter Siobhan Miller. She creates music with detail and rich melodies that combine the sounds of indie and alternative music with her upbringing in Scotland's folk music scene. Mercury is Miller's first album of entirely original material. Recorded in Glasgow with many of her frequent collaborators, including producer Euan Burton, it also features co-writes with Lau's Kris Drever and Admiral Fallow frontman Louis Abbott.

A gender-flipped answer to country supergroup the Highwaymen, Pistol Annies - Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley use their third album to take aim at tired ex-partners and those parts of themselves they’re ready to cast off. The post-divorce anthem “Got My Name Changed Back” and role-reversal roadhouse jam “Sugar Daddy” show off the trio’s cheek. But when they slow things down, as on the cutting but compassionate “Best Years of My Life” and “When I Was His Wife,” their harmonies and candid lyricism reveal the bruises hiding beneath all that bravado. Interstate Gospel is a new kind of fairy tale, one that turns the false promise of a happy ending into a fresh start.

In times like these you need groups. Bands. Bringing people together within a creative process. Calling on this plain fact Stuttgart native Martin Sörös promptly brought together four of the most sought-after and prolific musicians of the young German jazz-scene and founded his r’n’b infused jazz-ensemble Dr. Syros. Take Munich-based trumpeter Julian Hesse for example who during the past years has established himself as an inventive and technically superb instrumentalist and composer, or Daniel Mudrack, who is not only a sublime drummer, but also responsible for innovative sound concepts as can be heard on the debut album. Grounded by gig-hardened bassist and jazz-laureate Sebastian Schuster the band is indeed moving forward, leaving behind stereotypes and not giving a dime about styles and definitions.

This sophomore recording by bass phenom Alexander Claffy features a collection of familiar standards spanning several generations, from the American Songbook tradition to mid-20th century jazz classics to a Beatles favorite. Following his debut album, with its focus on a blend of contemporary soul and hip hop influences, it would be tempting to contrast the two projects as a looking forward/looking back dichotomy. This new album defies such easy categorization, however, with with deeply personal readings that update timeless melodies with an utterly timely approach.

Bay Area pianist Myra Melford – whom the New Yorker called “a stalwart of the new-jazz movement” – has spent the last three decades making brilliant original music, in equal parts challenging and engaging. She has explored an array of formats, from dynamic solo-piano recitals to deeply interactive small groups and even the swinging grandeur of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. But it’s her quintet Snowy Egret that best defines her artistry in 2018: “I really feel like it’s the vehicle that expresses where I am as a composer, performer and bandleader right now,” she says. Firehouse 12 Records will release The Other Side of Air, this ensemble’s new album, on November 12.
