Claire Huangci proves herself to be a vividly expressive interpreter of Chopin, the first since Artur Rubinstein to offer a complete cycle of the Nocturnes by Frédéric Chopin. During her background research work into Chopin’s oeuvre she repeatedly came across poems by French authors such as Charles Baudelaire, Victor Hugo and Tristan Corbière. She began to form associations and found a poem contemporary to each of Chopin’s nocturnes. You will find the links between poetry and music in the CD booklet.

Renowned French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard kicks off his exclusive engagement to PENTATONE with a recording of Olivier Messiaen’s Catalogue d’Oiseaux (1956-1958). The pianist had intimate ties to the composer himself and his wife, Yvonne Loriod, for whom Messiaen wrote the Catalogue. Praised by The Guardian as “one of the best Messiaen interpreters around,“ this is Aimard’s first recording of Messiaen’s most extensive, demanding and colourful piano composition.

This highly original album progresses through the scriptural seven last words of Christ on the Cross, pairing the music of William Billings and the Sacred Harp with the music of contemporary composers Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Jaakko Mäntyjärvi. In conjunction with this March 2018 release on the Sono Luminus label, Skylark will make its international debut at Tenebrae’s Holy Week Festival at St. John’s Smith Square in London.

Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre has no reason to be ashamed to finally find herself alongside Chambonnières and Couperin in the discography devoted to the 17th century harpsichord. This is what the scholarly booklet of this new album tells us. Almost unknown today, yet she enjoyed a great reputation during her lifetime. And for good reason. Her inspired compositions exploit all the registers of the harpsichord, giving generosity and brightness to her works.

Born and raised in Bossier City, Louisiana, country singer David Houston whose lineage included Sam Houston and General Robert E. Lee became a regular on The Louisiana Hayride as a teenager. Apparently his soaring tenor voice wasn't totally appreciated; he found trouble getting work in the music business, and ended up as an insurance underwriter.

One of many obscure underground rock albums issued by Columbia or its subsidiary Epic in the late '60s, Pat & Victoria Garvey's Mr. & Mrs. Garvey seems to have sold remarkably few copies considering that it came out on a major label. Not only that, it was produced by one of the most successful producers of the time, Bob Johnston (most known for working with Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash), and featured top Nashville session dudes like Kenneth Buttrey, Norbert Putnam, Wayne Moss, Charlie McCoy, and a young Charlie Daniels (with keyboards by a young Craig Doerge, who would become one of the top L.A. session men in the 1970s).

Seely had several Top 20 hits during the late '60s, including "It's Only Love," "A Wanderin' Man," and "I'll Love You More (Than You Need)." In 1969, she found her most commercially successful duet partner in Jack Greene; the two cut a hit album together, and their single "Wish I Didn't Have to Miss You" was a number two smash in 1970. Seely continued to record through the '70s, cutting material for Decca, MCA, and Columbia in addition to Monument, and landed her biggest solo hit of the decade with 1973's Top Ten "Can I Sleep in Your Arms," which she adapted from an old hobo tune.

Jeannie Seely was known primarily as a duet partner, but she managed a few country hits of her own during the late '60s and early '70s. A native of Titusville, Pennsylvania, Seely was born in 1940 and first performed on the radio at age 11. She sang at local dances and talent shows as a teen and moved to Los Angeles in 1961, where she worked as a secretary for a record company and honed her songwriting in the meantime. A deal with Challenge Records went nowhere, but when Dottie West recorded one of her songs in 1965, she heeded the advice of songwriter Hank Cochran and moved to Nashville.

The Mongo Santamaria/Columbia formula of Top 40 tunes retrofitted with an Afro-Cuban boogaloo beat gets another hyperactive workout here. The title tune, "Spinning Wheel," "Proud Mary," "My Cherie Amour" and "Get Back" are among the choices here, with Sonny Fortune occasionally scorching the earth on alto sax (and probably on flute), Joe Farrell turning up on tenor, and ever-versatile Bernard "Pretty" Purdie stoking the fires alongside Mongo. Yet the band is finally beginning to show some audible weariness with the whole operation – for which one cannot blame them.

It's difficult to find a country performer who has moved from her country roots to international fame more successfully than Dolly Parton. Her autobiographical single "Coat of Many Colors" shows the poverty of growing up one of 12 children on a rundown farm in Locust Ridge, Tennessee. At 12 years old, she was appearing on Knoxville television; at 13 she was recording on a small label and appearing on the Grand Ole Opry. Her 1967 hit "Dumb Blonde" (which she's not) caught Porter Wagoner's ear, and he hired Parton to appear on his television show, where their duet numbers became famous.

Dolly Parton's years for the Monument label were good ones, resulting in terrific straightforward country numbers, many of them written by her. The uncredited pickers, in particular the pedal steel, keep things really cooking. The arrangement on the opening number, "Why, Why, Why," makes the listener's head spin with both the precision of the pedal steel riffs and the clever shuffling of chords from the standard 1-4-5 progression. Even a skeptic will be able to follow Parton into her private realm of despair, always delivered in a beautiful voice promising hope.
