Bringing to light another of Hans Gál’s gorgeously melodic and finely crafted scores, AVIE presents the world premiere recording of the Austrian émigré’s Concertino for Cello and String Orchestra with Matthew Sharp supported by Gál aficionado Kenneth Woods conducting the English Symphony Orchestra. Gál’s compositional output was vast, varied and consistent, from his early success in 1920’s Germany, through internment during World War II, to his days in Edinburgh where he settled, became a respected academic and lived out his long life. His vivacious Cello Concertino was written in 1965, when he was 75 years old. The two spirited solo cello works were among his last, written at the age of 92.

The arrangements redefine the soundscape; they modify the spectator’s original experience of the music, but without damaging the images he or she already associates with it.

His fickleness and his language evolving with his influences : Strauss, Debussy, Scriabine in particular, could have been intimidating. Tara Jane O'Neil describes her eighth solo album as a singer/songwriter endeavor. At the invitation and design of Mark Greenberg (The Coctails), she recorded, mostly live, half of the record at Wilco's Loft Studio in Chicago with a band that included James Elkington, Gerald Dowd, Nick Macri, and Greenberg himself. The other half was made in O'Neil's home studio in California with Devin Hoff, Wilder Zoby, Walt McClements and string supervisor Jim James.

Trumpeter Brian Lynch has had an illustrious career, beginning with the Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and continuing as a member of the current Phil Woods Quintet. In between, he has led many projects and recorded many albums as a leader, and established himself as one of the top jazz trumpeters in the US. One of his assets is his deep understanding of and familiarity with Latin jazz, inspired by Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi and developed through his collaborations with Brazillian, Puerto Rican and Cuban musicians. The Brian Lynch Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra is a culmination of these developments. The relatively small, nine-piece band features five horn players and two percussionists, and can sound as big and expansive or as tight and small as the situation demands. As we can see from this collection of medium- to slow-tempo boleros, this band represents an exemplary combination of authentic Latin rhythms and vigorous jazz improvisations.
