Bright and lively music from the Swedish composer Dag Wirén is unveiled here in surround-sound by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Rumon Gamba, only a few years after the completion of their Grammy-nominated and highly acclaimed series devoted to the neglected orchestral treasures of Vincent d’Indy. In this unique recording Gamba uses the large body of a full symphonic string section, rather than the somewhat smaller-scale chamber orchestra setup that has tended to be used for this music in the past.

Due to a strong French influence at the beginning of the 18th century ‘bandes de hautbois’ were frequently present in the German courts. These instruments were initially intended for the performance of military and ceremonial music but soon began to take part in more courtly entertainments. A particular style of music was used in compositions for these instruments, as it was also in works for newer instruments, one of these being the oboe da caccia that Fasch employed as the solo instrument in a concerto that has only recently come to light.

Prince Nicolas Esterhazy, in whose service Haydn spent a large part of his life, was an enthusiastic champion of an instrument that was in the process of disappearing: this was the Baryton, a type of viola da gamba with sympathetic strings that were also able to be plucked.

It was Jean-Jacques Rousseau in his Dictionnaire de Musique who quoted the philosopher Fontenelle’s famous outburst ‘Sonata, what do you want from me?’. The Italian sonata was the fashion in France at that time and composers had abandoned the character pieces and the works in dance forms that had typified French music until then. Couperin, a proud champion of French music who was nonetheless attracted by the charms of Italian music, had tried to reconcile the musical tastes of the two nations by giving illustrative titles to the various movements of his sonatas.

Henri Du Mont first made provision for the performance of a number of his compositions by women’s voices in his Cantica Sacra (1652) and thus made it possible for these works to be sung in convents. This recording includes not only the motets intended for these institutions but also one of the Messes Royales in plainsong and several organ pieces from his Meslanges composed for the Dames religieuses qui touchent l’orgue.

For her highly anticipated first album on Sony Classical she joins forces with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI and the dynamic conductor Giacomo Sagripanti, winner of the Young Conductor prize at the 2016 International Opera Awards. The programme naturally includes two arias – the seductive ‘Habanera’ and ‘Seguidilla’ – from what has become her signature role. The selection goes on to reflect her broad dramatic and dramatic range, and personal history. It includes Lyubasha’s haunting a cappella song from Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride, an opera in which she subsequently sang under Daniel Barenboim at Berlin’s Staatsoper.

Ever since their beginnings as a band in 2000, Scraps Of Tape have been about one thing. The music. 20 years into their recording career Embrace are making an epic and emphatic return with their seventh studio album. With three #1 albums, six Top 10 singles, sold out arena shows and over two million album sales behind them, Embrace returned to the music scene three years ago with their Top 5 self-titled album Embrace. Already being hailed as a return to "classic" Embrace, new album 'Love is a Basic Need' was recorded in the first half of 2017 at the band's own Magnetic North Studio, produced by Richard McNamara. With tracks such as the emotive and powerful Never, 'Love is a Basic Need' sees Embrace return to the classic sound that first made us fall in love with them. Recorded with producer Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall), Mamba explores themes of self-inflicted isolation, working-class hopelessness, and the emotional damage of technology addiction. “Most of these new songs came from taking in what’s going on in the world today, and being afraid of the future we’re headed toward,” notes Garett van der Spek, the L.A.-based singer/songwriter behind Prism Tats.

The album features the film’s original music composed by James Newton Howard (The Hunger Games, The Sixth Sense, The Fugitive, Signs, King Kong, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). The movie revolves around a young woman who is drafted against her will to become a “sparrow,” a trained seductress assigned to operate against a first-tour CIA officer who handles the agency’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence.
