This is a treasure. Recorded a year before the death of Roebuck “Pops” Staples, it's our chance to hear a musical icon’s final work. Shortly before passing in 2000, Pops the patriarch of The Staple Singers told his daughter Mavis: “Don’t lose this.” She didn’t. Mavis, who recorded some of her own vocals for this release, enlisted Jeff Tweedy to overdub bass and help with production. Tweedy’s son Spencer plays drums. The result is vintage Pops the trademark tremolo guitar tone, spine-tingling vocals, and uplifting, socially conscious lyrics. Featuring several originals, two standards, and a live Bob Dylan tune, the entire album is strong; the backstory only adds to its poignancy.

Gill Landry has a lovely, lilting voice, and a real gift for melody and lyrics. The songwriting isn't complex, but it is brilliant. There are fantastic moments. My favourites are Just Like You - with incredibly evocative lyrics (Hung up and wasted in an artless town/thinking of old loves in wedding gowns) hung on a wonderfully sad melody, and Take This Body, with the added bonus of a Laura Marling guest appearance. But the whole album is a beautiful piece, which matches some of my moods in ways that no other music I have does.

"Right Away" is the new album by the Calabrian pianist Giampiero Locatelli. The album, due out on February 23rd for Auand (Goodfellas distribution) was recorded in a trio with Gabriele Evangelista on double bass and Enrico Morello on drums. The choice of the trio turns out to be the most suitable formation to completely realize the musical vision and is an ideal and logical consequence of the compositional approach of Locatelli and the consequent manipulation of the musical material. The contribution of Evangelista and Morello, which actively contributed to giving the music the definitive form, is fundamental in this process.

The follow up to 2013's critically lauded 'Cerulean Salt', 'Ivy Tripp' drifts confidently from its predecessor and displays a more informed and powerful recognition of where Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) currently finds herself. The previous themes of loss of youth and coming of age have been replaced with self control and sheer honesty; "My life has changed a lot in the last two years, and it's been hard for me to process my feelings other than by writing songs," says Crutchfield. "I think a running theme [of Ivy Tripp] is steadying yourself on shaky ground and reminding yourself that you have control in situations that seem overwhelming."

The Philadelphia singer Jazmine Sullivan encapsulates the breadth of R&B's emotional range not by riding the margins, but from a proud position at its center. She's such a singular artist, there's an easy temptation to contrast her excellent new album, Reality Show, with everything else.

Produced by Greg Wells (Adele, OneRepublic), Chase The Sun is filled with Holden's passionate, purpose-driven rock songs, which brim with tough, vibrant energy and showcase his lean, literate songwriting. Much of Chase The Sun was inspired by a life-changing, seven-week trip that the Scotland-born, England-bred artist took to India and Nepal in February 2013. Upon his return, Holden began to write the songs that appear on Chase The Sun, including the first single, "Hold On Tight," which he says was the driving force for the album.

Pokey LaFarge makes original Midwestern music. With one foot deep in the heart of the American musical tradition and the other firmly planted in the present, he continually challenges the notion that tradition-bearers fail to push musical boundaries. An eclectic writer and performer, he incorporates elements of early jazz, ragtime, country blues, Western swing, and beyond, transcending the confines of genre to present a sound very much his own. Something in the Water follows on the heels of his last album, released on Jack White's Third Man Records, but comes with an evolution in sound. Treated with a heavier dose of catchy rhythms and traditional drum kit percussion throughout, the 12 tracks on Something in the Water see LaFarge's sound imbued with new life.

Leilani Wolfgramm explores themes about people's internal struggles with materialism and habitual practices that enable an empty sense of self. Her lyrics are quite critical of the current state of society while at the same time she is still able to showcase her soul-infused vocal abilities on this album. ’Live Wire’ turns a critical eye on the perils of a culture where we continually chase the dragon of artifice and public approval, numb to the agony of it all, until we ultimately implode.

Andy Emler wished to work again with Marc Ducret more regularly. As a reminder, there was a record in quintet with Marc at the beginning of the 80s… More recently Andy invited Marc to join the MegaOctet, in particular in London and at the Europa Jazz Festival. The artistic closeness of both musicians is great, even if the way of their musical route diverges. Besides, the trio Emler, Tchamitchian, Echampard (13 years of existence, 3 CDs) is a formation which spreads its rich influence and its peculiarity in Europe. The music, fruit of a slow ripening, is marked by the formal requirement, and Andy's respect for three musicians who play with.

Heartland rocker John Mellencamp will release his 23rd full-length album, „Sad Clowns & Hillbillies“ featuring Carlene Carter, the daughter of June Carter Cash and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, on Republic Records.
