While his influence was of decisive importance for his direct successors, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, it continued to be felt in the Romantic period and right up to the twentieth century, notably in the composers of the Second Viennese School. Given the length of his career, the indefatigable Joseph Haydn lived through the multiple upheavals of the musical world between the mid-eighteenth and the early nineteenth centuries, confronting all the problems of a rapidly changing art in order to adapt his activity as a composer to the evolution of his era. Having been deputy then full Kapellmeister to the Esterházy princes since 1761, he was relieved of his duties at the court following the death of Prince Nicholas ‘the Magnificent’ in 1790, after almost thirty years of faithful service, though retaining his title.

The Japanese/British pianist Hiroaki Takenouchi has a boundless admiration for the works of Joseph Haydn, enchanted by his terrific inventiveness since his childhood. For his first album for Artalinna, he has selected four Haydn sonatas composed in the early 1770s. This is Haydn at his most inventive and whimsical, surprisingly fresh, and at times hauntingly beautiful.

The British might call the new album by drummer Aaron Comess, Sculptures, a "curate's egg." It's instrumental music, so as likely to be filed under "jazz" as anywhere else, but the focus is not on linear improvisation over changes or, for that matter, free improvisation either. Rather, it's a collection of performances running from two to seven minutes based on tight harmonic kernels, with a strong emphasis on texture rather than melody. Comess drummed for the Spin Doctors and Joan Osbourne among other artists, and presumably those mid-nineties gigs left him with a war-chest to finance experimental projects like this.

Although he was nicknamed 'the French Beethoven', Maude Gratton and Emmanuel Jacques give us the opportunity, in these three sonatas for piano and cello, the opportunity to discover the true personality of this composer whose music, with its highly individual colours, combines very operatic lyricism and theatricality, purely French elegance, rhythmic vitality, and dazzling virtuosity..

Susan Christie was a Philadelphia-based folksinger and a one-time member of the Highlanders, that city's top "big-band" folk ensemble of the early '60s. She attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and took easily to the new requirements of the booming folk-rock field in the mid-'60s. She was cheerful and sufficiently accessible as a singer to lend her voice to the song "I Love Onions" (popularized on the Captain Kangaroo show) in 1966.
