Here’s a tantalising extract from an inviting, vibrant album of cosmic jazz released earlier this year by French saxophonist and Sun Ra disciple Thomas de Pourquery. It seems to have gone very much under the radar – even my beloved Rate Your Music only has a couple of reviews for it so far. This is how Volume 2 was born in the story of Supersonic, a bird from the divine Sun Ra’s nest and who now goes flying: it is called “Sons Of Love. »

You may have all of these great songs, but this album brings them all together and it makes one terrific listen. Hit after hit comes at you like a runaway train, so good to the ears and it hammers home just how fantastic Elvis' voice was and his delivery of each song, pure magic. You'll never hear these songs come at you in this way even if you played each single one after the other like this. It's so refreshing to hear great music in this way, fantastic album.

It can often be difficult to fairly review an album when you have heard a large number of the tracks prior to the release, but with Allman Brown’s debut 1000 Years I found that it was a welcome challenge to listen with new ears to discover a collection of music that already included some of my favorite songs. Having been on the scene since 2013-or-so, Allman has already done a solid job of establishing his place among the likes of James Vincent McMorrow, John Smith, and well known contributors to the Irish and English Modern Folk Scene, if there is such a thing, and in releasing a record that he himself has acknowledged is a culmination of his work so far, he’s done an incredible job of cementing that place among existing favorites while drawing attention to his unique, individual sound.

Some 150 years ago what is sometimes called ‘The Great Migration’ of Finns to the United States began. Many of the Finns settled in the Mid-West, and especially in the so-called ‘Finn Hook’, consisting of parts of Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin. To celebrate this, the Minnesota Orchestra under its Finnish music director Osmo Vänskä commissioned the composer Olli Kortekangas to compose a work on the theme of migration, of a scale and nature suitable for performance alongside Jean Sibelius’s great Kullervo.

The glowing richness of Sharon Bezaly's tone is immediately striking. William Robert Mize was an American steel guitarist, band leader, vocalist, songwriter, and TV show host. Mize was born in Arkansas City, Kansas but raised in the San Joaquin Valley of California, an area steeped in country music thanks to relocated "Okies". He originally learned to play guitar as a child, but fell in love with the steel guitar he received for his 18th birthday. Billy Mize, one of the last important figures remaining from the golden era of the Bakersfield Sound. Billy was a crucial player in the birth of the Bakersfield Sound, but his polished style and refined vocal delivery set him apart from his peers.
