2018 will be branded as “Gewandhausjahr”: Gewandhausorchester celebrates its 275th birthday and the inauguration of Andris Nelsons as new Gewandhauskapellmeister.

Designed as an immersion in Gabriel Fauré's chamber music, the double album recorded by the pianist Simon Zaoui with Pierre Fouchenneret on the violin, Raphaël Merlin on the cello and the tenor David Lefort, unlocks the secrets of Fauré’s late style. In spite of their quasi hermetic density, the French composer's scores still retain the charm of his youthful works where his melodic genius was more direct.

Guggenheim Fellow and ASCAP Award winning composer Elena Ruehr's six string quartets are a magnum opus in which echoes of Perotin, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Dvorak, Schoenberg and jazz can be found, although the musical language is purely Ruehr's own.

Shannon & the Clams, are known for a diverse sound that incorporates elements of: doo-wop, early rock & roll, classic R&B, garage psych, and surf rock as influences, now releasing their fifth album, Onion. The Oakland-based, indie garage punk quartet is working with producer Dan Auerbach and Easy Eye Sound on this project. Over the last decade, Shannon and her chief collaborator, guitarist Cody Blanchard, have released four albums of ’60s-inspired pop on indie labels, toured tirelessly and have gradually solidified a lineup of devoted Bay Area musicians, Nate Mahan on drums and Will Sprott on keyboards. Onion continues the bands strong points with thirteen catchy, well-written songs, full of beautiful harmonies and twangy, fuzzy, instruments, combined with wild, boisterous vocals.

Nonesuch Records releases its third recording from pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan, For Gyumri, on February 16, 2018. A companion to last year’s An Ancient Observer, For Gyumri includes five additional songs. Hamasyan says of the two records: "These songs are musical observations about the world we live in now, and the weight of history we carry with us."
