Jazz, ambient, avant-garde, beautiful song structures - actually these music terms should be mutually exclusive. Not so with Yaron Herman, the phenomenal Israeli pianist, who casually ignores genre boundaries and thereby creates a thoroughly sensual, extremely modern music.

After playing Russians in four hands or at the side of the harpsichord, the jazz pianist returns to the solo exercise of reflection around Johann Sebastian Bach. Challenge raised, body and soul. Think Bach or think Bach and even rethink is the project of pianist Edouard Ferlet, balanced on the thread that distinguishes reproduction and invention, where as written by pianist and composer Adrian O. Smith (Arden Day) the work Bach would be both "the promise and the turn that the pianist would give us what the conjurers call prestige."

It doesn’t take too long with Volcano to realise that, while all the things that made the band special the first time around remain intact, a noticeable evolution has taken place. It’s there from the outset: the beefed-up beats of Certainty reveal an expanded sonic firmament, one in which bright synth hooks and insistent choruses circle around each other over chord sequences that strike just the right balance between nice and queasy. “If there’s a sense of scale,” says lead singer James Bagshaw, “It was really just a result of implementing a load of things that we didn’t know about the first time around.” Co-founding member and bassist Thomas Walmsley describes a record in which “we discovered a lot as we went along, and the excitement at having done so radiates."

The bulimic British who, when he doesn’t work on his own music, mixes for The XX, A$AP Rocky, Oneohtrix Point Never, Aphex Twin, Explosions In The Sky, Super Furry Animals, Radiohead, Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey, Manic Street Preachers, Sia and even Black Sabbath pursues here his 360° electro-new age trip armed with the Ableton Live software.

Michel Camilo & Tomatito have been gathering each other for more than 30 years in an almost predestined way. They first met back in 1984 at Madrid´s Sports Hall dressing rooms, during the city´s Jazz Festival. Michel was the pianist of Paquito D'Rivera´s Quintet while Tomtit was guest artist of Puerto Rican percussionist Ray Barretto. They came across each other but yet did not hang out. Then they met again in 1990, when Michel was producing Ketama’s album Pa’gente con alma (Philips, 1991). At that time, they were working on different projects but Tomatito recalls feeling really intrigued by the sounds he heard from the adjacent recording studio.

Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine, Chuck D and DJ Lord of Public Enemy and B-Real of Cypress Hill have lived the resistance from day one. So it's no surprise that in the midst of 2016's tumultuous election, the revolutionary musicians would join together as Prophets of Rage to combat the coming storm, whatever it may be. While the fierce independence and enduring influence of their collective lineage is nearly impossible to overstate, these creative kindred spirits knew immediately this was a different beast.

With We Free Queens, the high priestess of the Hammond organ was surrounded by the rising generation of jazzwomen of the hexagon: saxophonists Sophie Alour and Lisa Cat-Berro and thresher Julie Saury. With this Lady Quartet, Rhoda Scott invited some distinguished guests: Anne Pacéo on drums, Géraldine Laurent on sax and Julien Alour on trumpet. Not the latter is not an intruder, for, to quote Rhoda Scott's delicious expression herself, "we are not sex. Still elegant, generous, simple and enthusiastic at 78 years, Rhoda Scott signs here a superb disc with the swing tinged blues, sometimes light and sometimes percussive.

Italian pianist Danilo Rea started playing jazz in 1975 with the well-known Trio di Roma. Through the years he's worked with Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Bob Berg, Michael Brecker, Tony Oxley, Dave Liebman, Kenny Wheeler and John Scofield.
