Graham Ross directs the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge in music celebrating the feast of Epiphany, culminating in Arnold Bax’s unaccompanied double-choir masterpiece, 'Mater ora filium' (1926). The feast of Epiphany falls on 6 January, 12 days after Christmas. Marked in the Christian world with the story of the Magi, many composers have been inspired by the account of ‘the three kings’ following the star, bringing their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Working from Gershwin’s original manuscripts, Steven Richman and the Harmonie Ensemble/New York recapture the lean, unsentimental style the composer intended for 'An American in Paris' and 'Concerto in F', here featuring Lincoln Mayorga as the piano soloist. This third volume of Andreas Staier’s series devoted to the piano music of Robert Schumann begins with his first published composition, the ‘Abegg’ Variations op.1, and ends with his very last work, posthumously published ‘Geistervariationen’. The road he travelled between the two works was a long one, yet this programme also brings out the consistency of the poetic urge that gives Schumann’s music its matchless powers of evocation.

The vast heritage of Spanish traditional music lies at the heart of Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca's works. Both men relied heavily on the great flamenco artists of their day: the 'Canciones españolas antiguas' (Old Spanish songs) were recorded for the first time in 1931 by the dancer and singer Encarnación López, 'La Argentinita', accompanied on the piano by Lorca himself. It was the great flamenco singer and dancer Pastora Imperio, daughter of the legendary Rosario 'La Mejorana', who suggested to Falla and María Martínez Sierra that they might write the music and libretto, respectively, of 'El amor brujo'.

On the eve of his centenary in 2018, Sony Classical releases the most important collection, Leonard Bernstein’s classic American Columbia recordings, remastered from their original 2- and multi-track analogue tapes. This has allowed for the creation of a natural balance (for example, between the orchestra and solo instruments) that brings the quality of these half-century-old recordings, excellent for their time, up to the standards of today’s audiophiles. In addition, there has been a meticulous restoration of some earlier masterings in which LP surface noise was too rigorously eliminated at the expense of the original brilliance.

Recorded in 1955, this superbly arranged and sung set of slow ballads can lay claim to being the world's first 'concept album.' Of course, in classical music, song cycles had been around since Schubert, but a whole set of pop tunes arranged around a central theme or mood was something new in popular music. With the advent of the LP in 1953, commercial pop music was beginning to take itself seriously.
