Within a one-month period the Oscar Peterson Trio (with bassist Ray Brown and their new drummer Ed Thigpen) recorded nine different Songbook, 108 selections in all. Not too surprisingly, this music had a minimum of prior planning and few arranged passages, putting it on a lower level than the typical music played by Peterson's prior trio with guitarist Herb Ellis. The 12 numbers performed for the Jerome Kern album are given melodic and consistently swinging treatments with such songs as 'I Won't Dance,' 'The Song Is You,' and 'Pick Yourself Up' among the better selections heard on this pleasing program.

Em opened his official online store to fans who want to pick up merchandise and support the Detroit native ahead of the 19-track project's release date with a plethora of options. Items for purchase range from Shady-engraved dog tags, steel-printed "Walk On Water" lyrics hand-written by Em, a black t-shirt or hoodie with a graphic featuring the 45-year-old taking aim at his detractors. All purchases come with a digital or CD version of Revival, which is also available as a lithograph. The most expensive option for Stans to pre-order contains a bundle encompassing the previously mentioned dog tag and "Walk On Water" steel print, in addition to an exclusive autographed version of Revival, which will run you $500 in total for the package deal.

Henry Jackman has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming fantasy adventure Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The film is directed by Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher, Orange County) and stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Bobby Cannavale and Nick Jonas. The movie follows four high school kids who are transported into an adventure video game and must survive from its challenges. Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers (Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Lego Batman Movie) and Scott Rosenberg (High Fidelity) & Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) wrote the screenplay based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg.

The Crown is a 2016 American-British television drama series created by Peter Morgan and starring Claire Foy, Matt Smith & John Lithgow. Based on an award-winning play (“The Audience”) by showrunner Peter Morgan, this lavish, Netflix-original drama chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) from the 1940s to modern times. The series begins with an inside look at the early reign of the queen, who ascended the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI. As the decades pass, personal intrigues, romances, and political rivalries are revealed that played a big role in events that shaped the later years of the 20th century. The score is composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams & Lorne Balfe.

“Put on your Sunday finest and party like it’s Saturday night,” croons country star Zac Brown on the opening track from the debut album of his pop spinoff Sir Rosevelt. The lyric perfectly captures their sound—a wildly inventive vision of Southern pop that’s inspired by EDM, rooted in country, and produced by Timbaland and Pharrell. While that might sound like a frat boy’s dream come true, Brown, Niko Moon, and Ben Simonetti bring impressive precision (and pointed self-awareness) to this unlikely fusion, making the finished product feel exhilarating and surreal. They even pause to wink at themselves on “Robert Baker,” an absurdist banger with dancehall drums that pokes fun at the club scene.

Shostakovich's Second and Eleventh Symphonies are both inspired by Russian revolutions. The Eleventh Symphony, "The Year 1905", marks the bloody revolution of its namesake year. It is an astonishingly atmospheric symphony, of cinematic breadth, especially the second movement which depicts the Bloody Sunday massacre in St Petersburg.

Ludmila Berlinskaya has an impeccable pedigree. Daughter of Valentin Berlinsky, leader of the Borodin Quartet, she grew up in the company of some of the greatest Russian musicians of modern times, such as Richter (whose page-turner she was), Oistrakh, and Rostropovich. A fine chamber musician and an impressive soloist, she offers four major works for the piano by a quartet of great composers. Medtner’s sonata, which gives the album its title, is beautifully judged, while she invests the Schumann with real poetry, and charms with Ravel-playing of great flair.

Self-titling your fifth album sends a signal. The glad tidings are that No_One Ever Really Dies is not one of those rock fusions NERD have made in the past just to prove how versatile the production duo of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (and their childhood friend Shae Haley) could be. NERD are not only back, for the first time since 2010’s Nothing album, then, but relevant – political, even, in marked contrast to their slinkier incarnations. You get the impression that, however huge a hit Happy was for Williams, there was a desire for him to make some beats that could in no way soundtrack a children’s film. There is a strong Yolo bent, redolent of Pharrell’s Skateboard P days, to No_One Ever Really Dies. One track, Don’t Don’t Do It!, even breaks into something like ska. This is a brash, busy party record with its eyes wide open, in which the NERD brand is thoroughly refreshed.

Sometimes on his fifth album, “The Beautiful & Damned” (RCA), G-Eazy is stunningly good. Other times, though, he sounds like he’s phoning it in. It’s a weird dynamic, considering this didn’t have to be a double album and there is so much accumulated star power here that its breakout status was almost guaranteed. The hard-hitting first single “No Limit,” featuring A$AP Rocky and Cardi B, has already crashed the Top 10, while the more pop-leaning “Him & I,” featuring G-Eazy’s rumored girlfriend Halsey, seems set to surpass it on the strength of her haunting chorus.

In 2006, the Beatles coaxed producer George Martin out of retirement to remix and rearrange several of their iconic songs for Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas stage production Love. Martin, though, had a worry: At age 80 his hearing had turned difficult, and so he brought in a collaborator: his son Giles. The younger Martin had produced classical music, as well as recordings by Kula Shaker, Jeff Beck, Elvis Costello and Kate Bush. “He’s my ears,” George Martin said. What ears they turned out to be: Giles recombined parts of many of the Beatles’ songs into a mash-up of the band’s audio history, sometimes encapsulating much of it in a single song. “Get Back” opened with George Harrison’s memorable thrum from “A Hard Day’s Night” and Ringo Starr’s drum prologue from “The End,” caught sight of an overpassing jet from “Back in the U.S.S.R.,” pulled in part of the audience’s expectant murmur from “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and borrowed a bit of the orchestral swell from “A Day in the Life,” landing on John Lennon’s “Glass Onion.”

Christmas comes early for Chris Brown fans. The R&B superstar unwraps a 57-track deluxe edition of his album Heartbreak on a Full Moon. The repackaged version, titled Deluxe Edition: Cuffing Season – 12 Days of Christmas, adds 12 tracks to the original 45, and features appearances from Trippie Redd (“Yoppa”), Ella Mai (“This X-Mas”), Solo Lucci (“Secret”), and Brown’s rumored girlfriend Agnez Mo (“On Purpose”).
