For its final concert of the 2021–22 season and Osmo Vänskä’s last as artistic director, the Minnesota Orchestra chose to present Mahler’s mammoth Eighth Symphony, which calls for one of the largest complement of performers in the history of music, a symbol of the communitarian spirit of collective cultural, social and religious-philosophical endeavour in what has been referred to as a ‘Mass for the Masses’. Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, unlike his others, reveals no contrary despairing voice.

The young Swiss soprano Marie Lys was pleasantly surprised to discover that many of the roles she has sung in George Frideric Handel’s works in recent years were written for the spectacularly virtuoso soprano Anna Maria Strada, Handel’s prima donna in the London of the 1730s. Nattura from Iceland played the typical cross-styled Psychedelic Rock many acts in the country at the time loved to play, they added some complex instrumental tricks, poppy sensibilities and a few harder edges and eventually came up with an interesting sound, which was fairly rooted in a typical guitar/organ-driven model, yet bursts some mood for personal ideas and more emphatic arrangements.You can hear influences from Deep Purple, Curved Air and Czar in the process, that means electrified riffs, lots of organ instrumentals, psychedelic tunes and superb female vocals are all present in a tasteful music full of solos and light jams, starting from sharp and energetic rhythms and pyrotechnics and ending up in more harmonic or soft textures…

Fuego - a title that might be somewhat misleading - is the final Blue Note recording exclusively pairing Donald Byrd with Jackie McLean, a fruitful partnership that set the yin of the (in this case) restrained trumpeter, against the yang of the tart and extroverted alto saxophonist. While not quite a unified whole, the two were involved in turf battles that were based on mutual respect, here exuding a quieter fire that toned down McLean and muted Byrd to attain an intriguing harmonic balance. Duke Pearson's clever piano in the middle, with Doug Watkins playing bass and favored drummer Lex Humphries, made for one of the more diverse sounds in modern jazz circa 1959-1960. Of course hard bop is at the core of this band, but Byrd is moving further into post-bop, as served up heartily by the two horns during the modal, rambling, and staggered theme of the title selection…

Otis Redding's talent began to surge, across songs and their stylesand absorbing them , with the recording of The Soul Album. In contrast to The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads, which was an advance over its predecessor but still a body of 12 songs of varying styles and textures, rising to peaks and never falling before an intense, soulful mid-range, The Soul Album shows him moving from strength to strength in a string of high-energy, sweaty soul performances, interspersing his own songs with work by Sam Cooke ("Chain Gang"), Roy Head ("Treat Her Right"), Eddie Floyd ("Everybody Makes A Mistake"), and Smokey Robinson ("It's Growing") and recasting them in his own style, so that they're not "covers" so much as reinterpretations; indeed, "Chain Gang" is almost a rewrite of the original, though one suspects not one that Cooke would have disapproved of…

In their earlier incarnation as 1-2-3, they had a now-legendary residency at the Marquee club in early 1967, directly influencing many important bands such as Yes, The Nice, and King Crimson. They were managed by Brian Epstein and Nems, but this association ended shortly after Epstein’s death, and the band was signed by Terry Ellis to the fledgling Chrysalis empire…
