Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (a city that also saw the birth of another jazz piano great, Erroll Garner) Michael "Dodo" Marmarosa (1925-2002) counted among the most creative pianists of his generation, with a style that combined swing and bebop with innovative harmonies similar to those that characterized the playing of Lennie Tristano. Now mostly forgotten, Marmarosa played and recorded with such masters as Tommy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, Artie Shaw, Charlie Parker, Howard MacGhee, and Lester Young. This new 2CD Uptown label set, however, showcases him mostly in quartet (with Lucky Thompson on tenor sax), trio, and even solo formats. CD1 comprises various rarely head broadcasts, while CD2 is devoted to rare studio sides made for such obscure labels as Atomic and Down Beat.

Completing their Ring cycle on Naxos, Jaap van Zweden and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra have at last released their much anticipated recording of Götterdämmerung, which proves conclusively that this enterprise was a success. There had been some concern that Wagner's tetralogy would be an insurmountable challenge for this inexperienced orchestra, and that an untried conductor and singers would be unable to give convincing performances from start to finish. Beginning with the release of Das Rheingold in 2015, which was followed by Die Walküre in 2016 and Siegfried in 2017, the performances showed increasing confidence and commitment, not least from van Zweden, who had planned this project since he began his tenure with the orchestra in 2012, but also from the orchestra, which provided consistently solid playing and many moments of sheer brilliance.

Brett Garsed definitely falls into the Fusion category, this album twists and turns between Jazz and Rock and you can hear how Brett has been influenced by players such as Jeff Beck and Alan Holdsworth and yet in the opening track which is also the title track ‘Dark Matter‘ there are sections that get really heavy too with great drumming from Virgil Donati. This opening track is like a Brett Garsed showreel showing off his virtuosity and versatility.

This album is sonically a musical treat, since not only all gathered musicians are among the best in their field, but because Bruno Müller has also placed great emphasis on top studios including Mix Engineer.
