When the curtain fell at the Paris Opera premiere of Capriccio, the audiences rose to long and frenetic ovations. They unanimously applauded each singer in a cast of stars, but Renée Fleming was undoubtedly the leading light of this remarkable production. Every one of the performers in this production is outstanding and can be regarded as the best possible singer for the role - Opera fans from all over the world came to Paris to see this production. This Capriccio also served as a role debut for American star soprano Renée Fleming who took on the role of the Gräfin. The critics celebrated her performance as “ideal” in all aspects: musically, dramatically and above all vocally and she was cheered frenetically by the audience at the Palais Garnier of the Opéra National de Paris.

British-born Baroque violinist and conductor Garry Clarke and his Baroque Band, Chicago’s period-instrument orchestra, highlight unfamiliar and thoroughly enjoyable orchestral overtures by 18th-century English composer Maurice Greene, who is otherwise best-remembered for his choral music.
For its second Cedille recording, the “stylish and exciting” (Chicago Tribune) ensemble has selected a program of delightful works with what Clarke calls “whistle-able melodies, easy harmony, and inventive counterpoint” that evoke “the charm of the English countryside and the frivolity of the English 18th century. “Selections from Greene’s “Lessons for the Harpsichord, “performed by ensemble member (and longtime Cedille solo keyboard artist) David Schrader, offer similar pleasures.

The Song of Destiny is a dramatic overture dating from 1907 and in it and the Two Preludes on this disc Glazunov commands attention strongly. The Song uses the famous Fate theme from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and in a spirit of well-orchestrated gloom bites and strikes outwards and upwards. The atmosphere is very strong indeed and a far from obviously superior soul-mate would be Rachmaninov's Isle of the Dead. One of his most powerful scores lit by Rimskian flashes.

Passionate about the music of his own country, Peter Friis Johansson has commissioned new works as well as worked toward the unearthing of overlooked masterpieces of Swedish music. His latest disc presents the fruits of these efforts: one older, unfinished work with a completion by Johansson himself, the two others commissions made on his initiative. All three concertos were premièred between 2017 and 2020.

In August of 1961, the John Coltrane Quintet played an engagement at the legendary Village Gate in Greenwich Village, New York. Eighty minutes of never-before-heard music from this group were recently discovered at the New York Public Library. In addition to some well-known Coltrane material ("Impressions"), there is a breathtaking feature for Dolphy's bass clarinet on "When Lights Are Low" and the only known non-studio recording of Coltrane's composition "Africa", from the Africa/Brass album.
