American-based Green Linnet Records has been the definitive voice in Celtic music since the mid-'70s, and to celebrate its quarter-century mark, the label released a two-CD set featuring exceptional songs from some of the best loved artists on its roster. Often when labels assemble their best-of collections they end up sounding cobbled together with widely varying sound quality, sounding almost like an afterthought. Fortunately, Green Linnet has broken the mold with 25 Years of Celtic Music, a bright and complete-sounding compilation featuring a list of artists that reads like a who's who of Celtic music from the later part of the 20th century.

When Gabriel Fauré was a boy, Berlioz had just written La damnation de Faust and Henry David Thoreau was writing Walden. By the time of his death, Stravinsky had written The Rite of Spring and World War I had ended in the devastation of Europe. In this dramatic period in history, Fauré strove to bring together the best of traditional and progressive music and, in the process, created some of the most exquisite works in the French repertoire. He was one of the most advanced figures in French musical circles and influenced a generation of composers world-wide.

This is an epic 'best of' from the great Hans Joachim Roedelius one of the pioneers of Krautrock and early electronica. What's more, he's 74 years old and still producing music, now how's that for commitment to the scene? Working with Kluster, Human Being, forming Cluster with Dieter Mobius and working with Mobius and Michael Rother as Harmonia - the man has covered a lot of ground in his time, and that's never been as evident as on these two discs. We've got squelchy synthesized Krautrock classics, industrial jams, electro-pop, ambient, piano-led classical and more, the variety on here astounds me, I knew his work but you kind of become blind to the experimentation until you hear it all in one place. Listening to 'Works (1968-2005)' is like hearing a bible of electronic music, it contains so many important starting points for many sounds and genres it's quite amazing that it all came from the brain of one troubled producer. Listen to this and find out why you loved electronic music in the first place….

Amazon Review by David Sheridan
Lots of good new wave era chestnuts on this compilation. I wonder where perhaps Talking Heads, Echo & the Bunnymen or Graham Parker are, why no Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds/Rockpile, why no "Girl of My Dreams" by Bram Tchaikovsky, and they definitely seemed to put this together having drawn a somewhat arbitrary line in the sand somewhere between punk and new wave (no Pistols, no Clash, but the Ramones and Sham 69 are here). And then we get the Tubes (almost more musical theatre than new wave) and Hazel O'Connor (wtf?). And they also include whatever a Jilted John is. There's more than a little overlap with some other compilations and box sets out there (although I still know of no proper full sized new wave box set, Rhino, where are you?), but this will send those of us of a certain age nostalgically back to the days of Jimmy Carter in the White House, lining up for 79 cent gallons of gas and skinny ties with the knot a few inches below your collar…remember the first time you heard My Sharona? Maybe in your Ford Maverick while sitting in one of those gas lines…

The Ace Records family has reissued numerous collector-oriented compilations from the Stax vaults over the years, and this 2012 anthology was intended as the first of a planned series on its Kent subsidiary focusing on Stax tracks from the late '60s and early '70s. The 21 tracks all focus on Stax recordings that fall into the Southern deep soul category – not a problem as such soul abounded on the label, though these might be more deep soul-oriented than the typical Stax reissue. It's also oriented toward songs that aren't too familiar – none of them were hits, and three of them were previously unreleased, though most of them did come out as singles between 1968 and 1975. And while some of the artists (Johnnie Taylor, Jimmy Hughes, William Bell, Inez Foxx, Eddie Floyd, Mable John, Little Milton) at various points had substantial hits (though not always for Stax), they're outweighed by acts that will largely be recognized only by those that study the fine print of Stax discographies.

When Leslie West passed away in December of 2020, he left behind a towering legacy of epic recordings that few rock guitarists can match. But there was more to West than great songs (although, to be sure, he created a ton of them); there was his brilliant, idiosyncratic sound, a gargantuan earth-mover that razed arenas and stadiums across the globe. More than just paralyzing tone, though, he also had a touch nobody could beat. Stinging, swooning and sensual melodies leapt from his fingertips - with a deft flick of his wrist, he sounded like a Delta bluesman had picked up a violin. These elements and more helped to make West one of the most significant, influential and irreplaceable guitarists of the rock era. Originally, the album was intended to be a retrospective celebration of West's music on which the guitarist himself would perform some of his best-loved cuts with notable guests, along with a collection of new tracks…

2015 release from the hard rock vocalist best known for his work with White Sister and Tattoo Rodeo. The album was produced and mixed by AOR/melodic rock legend Paul Sabu. After the death of his long-time friend and musical co-hort Rick Chadock, Dennis began writing on his own as a form of therapy, and in 2014 was reunited with Sabu, who also supplied the guitar work. DCD drew priceless encouragement from the multi-talented Sabu, whose bands have included Only Child, Silent Rage and Sabu. I is heavily influenced by the music of the late-1970s and '80s, mixing chunky grooves with radio-friendly melodies and drawing influence from DCD's favorite acts, including The Beatles, Bad Company, Journey, Steve Perry, John Waite, Styx and Toto.

As an album title, Good to Be… drifts off on a wave of ellipses, but on the record itself, it's presented as "Good to Be (Home Again)," making the spirit of Keb' Mo's 15th studio album explicit: he's settled into a comfortable groove, appreciating good vibes and mellow grooves. Despite cameos from Darius Rucker and Americana stalwarts Old Crow Medicine Show, there's not a pronounced country or folk undercurrent here. Good to Be… is cut from the same cloth as 2011's slick, soulful The Reflection, only it's even smoother and mellower – so low-key, it can veer into adult contemporary territory, a connection underscored by Kristin Chenoweth's appearance on the album closer "Quiet Moments." If Good to Be… sometimes is a little too cozy – it's executed well and its unifying spirit is evident, but a cover of "Lean on Me" still feels a little overly familiar – it's nevertheless a warm, welcoming album that's every bit as soothing and comforting as Keb' Mo' intended it to be.

"Fame and Fashion" is a David Bowie compilation album issued in 1984 by RCA Records featuring songs recorded between 1969's David Bowie and 1980's Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps). After Bowie left RCA Records in 1983, RCA, wishing to capitalize on his immense popularity at the time, continued to release compilation albums without his permission or input. Soon after the release of this album and the reissue of his entire RCA album catalog on compact disc, Bowie reclaimed the rights to his recordings and his entire RCA album catalog went out of print, until it was first reissued by Rykodisc, beginning in 1989.

Following the bleak But Seriously and Both Sides, Phil Collins delivered the considerably lighter Dance into the Light, his first upbeat pop album since 1985's No Jacket Required. Not only was it a return to the musical style that brought him to the top of the charts during the '80s, but Dance into the Light was the first record Collins released since leaving Genesis, which made it all the more crucial to his career…
