A solid bop-based pianist, Eddie Higgins has never become a major name, but he has been well-respected by his fellow musicians for decades. After growing up in New England, he moved to Chicago, where he played in all types of situations before settling in to a long stint as the leader of the house trio at the London House (1957-1969). Higgins moved back to Massachusetts in 1970 and went on to freelance, often accompanying his wife, vocalist Meredith D'Ambrosio, and appearing at jazz parties and festivals. Eddie Higgins has led sessions of his own for Replica (1958), Vee-Jay (1960), Atlantic, and Sunnyside; back in 1960, he recorded as a sideman for Vee-Jay with Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter.

Fittingly–she stars in the action flick with Jet Li–Aaliyah shines the brightest on the R&B- and hip-hop-filled soundtrack of Romeo Must Die. The new "Try Again" echoes the combo of heartfelt vocals and brain-grabbing production that marked her earlier triumph "Are You That Somebody?" while her duet with DMX, "Come Back in One Piece," continues the trend of songs built on sensible female-to-male-gangsta advice. Aside from Aaliyah's two other cuts, the rest of the disc is uneven; Chante Moore's "This Is a Test" ("I gotta take you to school / Be there at nine o'clock") and Dave Bing's "Somebody Gonna Die Tonight" rank in the high end of the remains. –Rickey Wright

The makers of the Walt Disney/PIXAR CGI-animated movie WALL·E, which concerns the adventures of a cute robot in a post-apocalyptic future, must have had quite a budget. Thomas Newman has composed what sounds like five different movie scores for it, and he has gotten a giant studio orchestra (there are 52 violinists, just to begin with) as well as plenty of other instrumentalists, to play it. There are grand orchestral themes full of lush string playing, stirring action music, cues that sound like they combine sound effects with the music, contemporary pop tunes, and even a complement of those quirky little motifs, usually played on odd instruments, that are Newman's signature as a composer. (Think of the theme he wrote for the TV series Six Feet Under.) As if that's not enough, there are plot-derived excerpts from the soundtrack to Hello, Dolly!, Louis Armstrong playing and singing "La Vie en Rose," and, last but not least, a story-concluding song by Peter Gabriel that earned him (and Newman) an Academy Award nomination for Best Song. Clearly the music plays a big part in WALL·E, and Newman has done his part to make it another hit from the already wildly successful PIXAR animation studio.

Coming three full years after 2003's Viva Emptiness, The Great Cold Distance continues the trend toward the mainstream that Katatonia began with that album. Singer Jonas Renske - who apparently lost his ability to do the now-clichéd Cookie Monster vocals some years ago due to medical problems - has refined his voice into a much smoother and, surprisingly, more powerful instrument that's capable of greater emotional shadings. Similarly, this album forsakes the blastbeats and hyperspeed riffing for a more dynamic sound that makes smart use of slow and quiet passages. They're still heavy: "Deliberation" and "Leaders" are as brutal as anything on the band's career high point, Last Fair Deal Gone Down…

Between 1965's Maiden Voyage and 1968's Speak Like a Child, Herbie Hancock was consumed with his duties as part of the Miles Davis Quintet, who happened to be at their creative and popular peak during those three years. When Hancock did return to a leadership position on Speak Like a Child, it was clear that he had assimilated not only the group's experiments, but also many ideas Miles initially sketched out with Gil Evans. Like Maiden Voyage, the album is laid-back, melodic, and quite beautiful, but there are noticeable differences between the two records. Hancock's melodies and themes have become simpler and more memorable, particularly on the title track, but that hasn't cut out room for improvisation…

One of Schoenberg's leading pupils and disciples, Anton Webern continued to write songs throughout his life. It is thus possible to follow his development as a composer, from early traditional writing to the more experimental work of his later years, from the tonal to the atonal, and to the sparer textures for which his work became well known.

Although Cream were only together for a little more than two years, their influence was immense, both during their late-'60s peak and in the years following their breakup. Cream were the first top group to truly exploit the power trio format, in the process laying the foundation for much blues-rock and hard rock of the 1960s and 1970s…

With the major project "Bach Organ Landscapes" and the recording of all of Johann Sebastian Bach's organ works, the German conductor, harpsichordist and organist Jörg Halubek invites you on a comprehensive journey to historical organ builders who shaped Johann Sebastian Bach. "The further you look back into music history, the more regional developments can be discovered," says the artist. “These connections between instrument and organ work characterize the so-called organ landscapes”. The third and fourth albums of the ten-part series are about 'Hamburg' and 'Lüneburg & Altenbruch'.

Anton Rubinstein wrote his Persian Songs in 1854, while on tour in Germany. The source was a recent collection of poems by Friedrich von Bodenstedt, who advertised them as translations from the work of the Azeri poet Mirza Shafi Vazeh (Mirzə Şəfi Vazeh, 1805-52), with whom he had studied during his travels to the Caucasus. Tchaikovsky was later commissioned to produce a singable Russian translation of the German texts, but he disputed the provenance, maintaining that Bodenstedt, whom he had met, did not know Persian and simply invented the poems (Bodenstedt, as it happens, had by then decided to claim the authorship of these bestselling poems for himself). The 20th century saw a revival of Vazeh’s work, and an examination of the original texts showed that Bodenstedt had indeed translated them, although his versions were much more effusive than Vazeh’s.

La virtù de’ strali d’Amore was the first of ten operas Cavalli wrote with librettist Giovanni Faustini. Set in Cyprus, the plot involves enchanted and pastoral elements, love and its thwarting, the counterpointing of Man and God, sorcery, revelation and ultimate resolution, all accomplished in a brilliant series of scenes. A follower of Monteverdi, Cavalli reveals the influence of the older man but also his own pronounced independence. Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante have become one of the most admired partnerships in the history of baroque music performance.
