A quick internet search brings up some extraordinary footage of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry producing a session at the Black Ark. Taken from the film ‘Roots, Rock, Reggae’, directed by Jeremy Marre, the sequence shows Junior Murvin collaborating with members of the Congos and the Heptones on a song improvised on the spot for the film crew. Before the vocals are recorded, the Upsetters lay down the backing track. The musical director of the session is the afro-haired bass player, Boris Gardiner; unusually, it is he who counts in the band to start each take. After a long conversation with Boris a few years back, I asked Lee about his contribution to the Black Ark sound.

The famous court orchestra of Prince Elector Carl Theodor of the Palatinate was distinguished by the fact that its musicians were not only certified virtuosos on their instruments but also good composers. Some of these most highly capable musicians basked in the limelight of the international music world, while others stayed in the background without this meaning that they were less-talented musicians. One of them was the horn player and later double bassist Anton Dimler, a member of the Mannheim Court Orchestra who today is known as a composer only to a few specialists even though his works exhibit great quality. This is also true of his clarinet concertos, three of which have been recorded for the first time on the present release. The focus in them is always on the highly virtuosic solo parts, while the orchestral accompaniment exercises a subordinate function. The soloist has the opportunity to display his brilliance with passagework, arpeggios, and shifts of register and makes all the colors of the clarinet shine over its whole tonal gamut.

Jazz Icons: Dizzy Gilespie features two historic concerts from one of the founding fathers of bebop. Filmed 12 years apart, the 1958 concert features Dizzy working eloquently within the small combo structure of a quintet including such influential musicians as sax player Sonny Stitt and bassist Ray Brown. The second show focuses on a completely different side of Dizzy, fronting the legendary Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. With a 16-piece big band to conduct, including two drummers, his Latin influences are revealed on "Con Alma" and "Manteca."

Trojan Horse are one of those bands who defy easy categorisation. A protege of Henry Cooke, first director of the choir of the Chapel Royal after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Pelham Humfrey was part of a generation of musicians who enriched the musical life of their native England with influences drawn from continental Europe - from France, where Humfrey had studied between 1664 and 1667, and from the Italian musicians at work in the London to which he returned, succeeding Cooke in 1672.Today the same choir sings at St James's Palace, where the present recording was made by gracious permission of Her Majesty The Queen. Joined by a small instrumental ensemble led by Delphian regular Bojan Čičić, with an antiphonal layout inspired by records of the former chapel at Whitehall, this group of ten boy choristers and six adult singers revives the musical and devotional world of its former director, in intimate performances alive with its predecessors' improvisational flair.

The American-born lutenist Paul Beier has been a central figure in establishing a solo lute performance scene in his adopted country of Italy. He has often participated in productions of early operas at La Scala and other major Italian opera houses, and at the Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico.
Paul Beier was born in 1954 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended the Royal College of Music in London, studying with Diana Poulton; she was a student of Arnold Dolmetsch and herself a pioneer in early music in Britain. From her, Beier absorbed not only lute skills, but also enthusiasm for research into historical performance practices. In 1981, Beier was asked to create a new lute program at the Civica Scuola di Musica in Milan, Italy. He has taught there ever since, adding basso continuo and Renaissance ensemble classes to his responsibilities. Beier was a founder of the Italian Lute Society; he is a consulting editor of the Lute Society of America Journal and has written widely on lute performance. Beier's solo performance career has taken him on tours throughout Europe, the Americas, and Australia. His repertory is focused on Baroque lute music, extending from music of the early 16th century to works by Bach and Silvius Leopold Weiss. Beier founded his own Baroque ensemble, Galatea, and he has also collaborated with La Cetra and other major Baroque groups in Italy and elsewhere. He is the creator of Beiertab, a computer program that facilitates the creation and editing of lute tablature, its conversion into standard notation, and its audio realization. Beier has a large discography of solo lute recordings on the Stradivarius label, including, in 2019, John Dowland: What if a day. He has also recorded for Opus 111, Glossa, Tactus, and other labels, and made four recordings as director of Galatea.
