Collection The Heritage of Monteverdi Whether they played violin, cornet, harpsichord or theorbo, Italian musicians of great renown called Buonamente, Castello, Pesenti and Ferro crossed the Alps to take up much-coveted posts at the courts of Emperors Ferdinand I and II. Their splendid music surged forth, blending the blaze of the brass with the sweetness of the strings in an unceasing tourney of virtuosity and emotions depicted in sound. A major rediscovery of this music as an instrumental prelude to the first madrigal of Monteverdis 8th Book, which ends this new recording of La Fenice.

Although the first violin virtuosos came mainly from Cremona, Brescia or Mantua, it was Venice that swiftly emerged as the principal centre for the development of instrumental music. Moreover, it was there that most collections of this music were printed all through the seventeenth century. It is curious to note that all these virtuosos obviously enjoyed sharing their success with their colleagues: for, alongside works for one or two violins and continuo, almost all the composer-violinists gathered together on this disc conceived sonate, canzone or sinfonie for ensembles of three or four violins. In addition, these compositions often make use of bichoral or echo effects.

After the harrowing Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon returned to calmer, more conventional territory with Imagine. While the album had a softer surface, it was only marginally less confessional than its predecessor. Underneath the sweet strings of "Jealous Guy" lies a broken and scared man, the jaunty "Crippled Inside" is a mocking assault at an acquaintance, and "Imagine" is a paean for peace in a world with no gods, possessions, or classes, where everyone is equal…

Mezz Mezzrow was a jazz musician better known for writing his exaggerated autobiography Really the Blues in 1946 than for his clarinet playing. This Classics disc highlights the year 1947 when Mezzrow was recording for his own King Jazz label. Even on up-tempo hot numbers, a hazy laid back approach was consistently maintained, which may have had something to do with Mezzrow's fondness for marijuana. However, these are highly enjoyable recordings that feature vocalist Coot Grant on six of the discs 20 tracks along with top New Orleans jazzmen including Sidney Bechet, Pops Foster, and Baby Dodds.

Singer, keyboarder and producer Yogi Lang (RPWL) has summoned prominent supporters for his album: Manni Müller on drums (ex-RPWL, Claudia Koreck), Torsten Weber on guitar (Doors of Perception) and distinguished bass luminary Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd) underline and emphasize the singer’s expressive lyrics in their very own exceptional way. Special appearances by violinist Anne de Wolff (Rosenstolz among others) and Dominique Leonetti, singer for French progressive band Lazuli, add another artistic layer of color to the record. An album as complete and as personal as in any way possible: Yogi Lang defies of staffage and needless acoustic decoration – the songs float free within the emotions and leave certain topics to move drift spherically in time. With the stunning Artwork from Artist Judith Reichart the Digipack becomes a real collector’s piece.
