Everywhere that Laura Fygi visits, she is a veritable vision of exotica. In her home country of the Netherlands, they know her as the woman who was raised in Uruguay as the daughter of an Egyptian belly dancer; in the Far East she is the emancipated Western lady who many others aspire to be. But wherever she may be, there's one common factor in all of those locations: that instantly recognisable voice which has won her hearts all over the globe.

By the time Kix had recorded this, their fourth album, all eyes in the Hard Rock biospace were upon them as a band expected to rise up from the ranks to achieve success and exert influence. Certainly their record label Atlantic Records believed in the band enough to steer them towards not one, but three top notch producers; that's Tom Werman (Mötley Crüe, Cheap Trick, Ted Nugent) together with the dynamic duo of Duane Barron and John Purdell (Ozzy Osbourne, Dream Theater). Recorded in Los Angeles and issued in August 1988, the record was immediately heralded as the best Kix album so far, with critics pointing out the quality of songs and a refinement of their trademark rough and tumble sound.

Ever since he was a child, Norwegian composer Henrik Hellstenius has sought to explore music more freely than by simply mastering the classics. His language, which draws its inspiration from the modes of expression of his time, takes shape in the course of his work through sound, movement, rhythm and silence, as well as in his encounters with musicians and their instruments. Here, much of what is expressed is part of an intense inner monologue: a litany of doubt, affirmation and frustration being whispered, said, sung and shouted. Everything about these two works, from their titles to their modes of expression, suggests that they are directed outwards towards society in general and towards individuals in particular. Public Behaviour is about how we act together in an age of extreme individualism.

‘Growing Eyes Becoming String’ is the sixteenth studio album from British noise-rock pioneers The Telescopes. Originally recorded over two sessions back in 2013 – one over a harsh Berlin winter in the Brian Jonestown Massacre studio with Fabien Leseure, and a second back in Leeds with early Telescopes producer Richard Formby – it’s a lost treasure that nearly never was. Succumbing to a hard-drive crash nearly a decade ago, the sessions were presumed lost and soon forgotten, until now. Miraculously rescued from the digital ether and finished by founding member Stephen Lawrie in his own studio over the pandemic, the album is now finally set for release in February 2024 via Fuzz Club and reveals another side to where The Telescopes were at in 2013.

The music in this collection reflects the spirit of Armenia through dances and songs that have their origins in scenes from everyday Armenian life. Korganov’s pictorial Bayati is an especially vivid representation, while Kara-Murza’s Pot-pourri sur des airs arméniens is a significant work, combining Armenian folk music with the Western piano tradition. Melikian’s Emeralds is one of his famous cycles of romances, hallmarked by a strong sense of poetic narrative and a vivid emotional expressiveness. This album of Armenian piano discoveries is played by Yulia Ayrapetyan, a specialist in the music of Armenia.

The album contains a compilation of works by Carl Friedrich Abel, a composer living in the times of the Bach family, forgotten for two centuries. His manuscripts, saved by the Drexel family - English philanthropists, culture lovers and artists - include both musically excellent and complex composi-tions. The richness of the dynamic and articulation contrasts sometimes brings to mind Mozart's early symphonies, but sometimes it also takes the listener back to the world of sound solutions from before the Baroque era. The composer used the potential of the viola da gamba to the fullest.

Rune Alvers' CD Le nouveau Grieg is currently being digitally relaunched on the LAWO Classics label. The CD was recorded on Edvard Grieg's own grand piano at Troldhaugen Bergen in 2007. The term Le nouveau Grieg - The new Grieg, refers to the composer's Slåtter op. 72, which is included in its entirety on the CD along with Lyriske stykker op. 71. However, tonight's concert presents a broader selection of Edvard Grieg's production with verbal intros of a historical and musical nature.

Swedish bassist, cellist and composer Lars Danielsson and his special guests create a broad sound world, using the sonic capabilities of a symphony orchestra to great effect. With the bass as the central pivot and the dazzling grandeur of the orchestra, Danielsson's highly-developed creativity in many disciplines is clearly set out on these 12 pieces, including the title track, an instrumental version of Libera Me from Gabriel Fauré's Requiem. It all comes together to created an organic rounded whole, in which it is clear that the orchestra is not just an accessory.

Esteemed musician, songwriter and author Rodney Crowell has teamed up with New West Records to release Tarpaper Sky, his new self-produced album. It comes fast on the heels of Old Yellow Moon, Crowell’s critically lauded collaboration with Emmylou Harris, which won a 2013 Grammy® Award and was named 2013 Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association. Crowell has pushed the boundaries of country, folk and roots music since long before the term Americana was coined as a genre, making a name for himself and gaining respect as both a songwriter and as an artist.
