Trio Stadtlmann is a Japanese trio formed and active in Switzerland, featuring the world's rarest stringed instrument, the baritone. Celebrating their 10th anniversary, the Trio Stadtlmann released their first recorded work with the cooperation of Tokyo Zoshigaya Haiobun-tei, which has been conducting a project to perform Haydn's complete baritone trio works. It also includes the only quintet in existence that includes two horns!

When Black Pumas made their self-titled debut in 2019, the Austin-bred duo set off a reaction almost as combustible and rapturous as their music itself. Along with earning a career total of seven Grammy Award nominations (including Album Of The Year) and winning praise from leading outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, singer/songwriter Eric Burton and guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada achieved massive success as a live act, touring large theatres all over Europe and North and South America and delivering a transcendent show Burton aptly refers to as “electric church.”

Eugène Godecharle was director of music at the church of Saint-Géry in Brussels before his appointment as first violinist in the court orchestra. He was not only an outstanding violinist and violist, but seems also to have mastered the pedal harp; he subsequently made brilliant use of the tonal and technical possibilities that the newly invented pedal mechanism had enabled. His Sei Quartetti Op. IV are notable for their musical and tonal diversity as well as for the particular textures that Godecharle employed in their composition. In these harp quartets, recorded here for the first time, Société Lunaire explores a particularly fascinating sound world; their energetic allegros as well as melancholy and galant movements enrich the chamber music repertoire of the second half of the 18th century in a most elegant and charming manner.

“For me, whenever I play the Bach suites, all of a sudden I find myself visualising Giacometti’s hands incessantly moulding the earthen clay until a face appears. Getting to grips with the Bach suites is very closely related to that sense. You have to dig deeply into the string to give birth to the phrase, to make sure it breathes correctly: a phrase that is perpetually becoming, endlessly making and remaking itself. I waited a long time before recording these suites. Then one day, or rather one night, I began.Then there was my meeting with Sarah Moon. When I first felt my longing to record the Bach suites, I dreamt constantly of her images; because whenever I look at them I think of the creation of the world, the separation of the waters, the earth appearing, all before the beginning of history.”

Karine Deshayes, one of today's most remarkable interpreters of Mozart together with the vocal and instrumental ensemble Les Paladins, gives an outstanding performance in this program of his sacred and secular works, in which the motet Exsultate, jubilate! Forms the centrepiece. Her rich, full-bodied voice taps directly into the roots of this highly virtuosic piece, originally written for a powerful, resonant soprano castrato tessitura.

How composers draw their creative lives to a close continues to fascinate. Are their final works the culmination of all that has gone before, or do they suggest what might have come next? Did illness enhance their profundity or diminish their powers? Can we listen to such pieces without thinking of them as some kind of message from beyond? The music featured on this recording each suggest different answers to these questions and challenges some preconceptions.

Alexander Rudin and the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra here present two symphonies by Nikolai Myaskovsky — one of the most undiscovered composers of the 20th century. In his creative legacy, Myaskovsky equals his more famous contemporaries — Prokofiev and Shostakovich.

On Un’alma innamorata, Aspromonte urges us to take ownership of our amorous infatuations, rather than blaming it on Cupid’s arrows. The programme consists of several worldly cantatas with violino concertante – including the famous Mi palpita il cor and a world premiere recording of S’un dì m’appaga la mia crudele – interspersed with instrumental sonatas. The overall chamber-musical approach of Un’alma innamorata increases the emotional impact of the tragic heroines depicted by Aspromonte.

After an album devoted to the final trilogy, Riccardo Minasi and Ensemble Resonanz continue their exploration of Mozart’s symphonies. These formidably expressive, incandescent interpretations give us the impression we are discovering the works for the first time. "Minasi and his expert 35-strong band (modern instruments, period ethos) play up the music’s disruptive aspects for all their worth. With lean, vibrato-light strings and assertive wind and brass, tutti textures have an abrasive clarity."

In 1781, the Zong – a British slave ship – left Ghana with twice the number it was designed to carry, bound for Jamaica. The ship’s owners claimed that drinking water was running low, and ordered the crew to throw more than 130 living enslaved people overboard.
