One of today’s foremost exponents of his instrument, Jakob Lindberg arrived at the lute by way of the guitar and played both for several years. When he decided to devote himself exclusively to the historic lute repertoire it was with some regret that he gave up his first love. During his last year with the modern guitar Lindberg was working on Benjamin Britten’s Nocturnal after John Dowland, one of the seminal guitar works of the 20th century. Much later, when he learned that Britten had originally had in mind to compose a piece for the lute, he started to experiment playing sections of Nocturnal on his Renaissance lute, and soon decided to make a transcription of the complete work.

Formed in 1968 in Kent, England, the band is probably best remembered for the hit songs "Early In the Morning" and "Hitchin' A Ride", which both became gold in the USA and reached the Top Ten. "Hitchin A Ride" actually became a hippy anthem and dance craze. Going against the heavy acid rock trend of the late sixties with their brilliant melodies and harmonic singing, the band, still active today, is one of the true forgotten gems of the era.

Country songwriter and recording artist Nat Stuckey originally worked as a DJ before forming his first country band in the late '50s and becoming a regular on the Louisiana Hayride show. It was during this time that he was signed to the Paula label out of Shreveport, LA, and scored a minor hit with 1966's "Sweet Thang." His next hit came as a songwriter, however, when Buck Owens recorded "Waitin' In Your Welfare Line." Stuckey profited from the publishing royalties, and followed up with another big hit, writing "Pop a Top" as recorded by Jim Ed Brown. He recorded a few other hits such as 1968's "Plastic Saddle" and "Sweet Thang and Cisco," but he became known more as a songwriter than a performer in his own right. Stuckey later worked in commercials.

The second and final album by Four Jacks and a Jill garnered no hits on the level of their sole U.S. Top 40 entry, "Master Jack," but Fables is a completely charming slice of sunshiny folk-rock. Lead singer Glenys Lynne's dreamy vocals are at the center of these simple, upbeat songs, surrounded by crisply strummed acoustic guitars and occasional keyboards and strings. Interestingly, much of the album makes use of the group's South African heritage, with thumb piano and other local percussion coloring songs like the traditional folk tune "Mama Come Home" and a pair of songs written by their compatriot, Miriam Makemba, "The Click Song" and "Pata Pata."

A pleasing vocalist with a warm delivery reminiscent of Andy Williams or Tony Bennett, John Gary unfortunately came along just at the beginning of the British Invasion and never managed to make much of an impression on the adult vocal audience. Born in 1932 in Watertown, New York, he was a singer on Don McNeill's radio show Breakfast Club before signing a contract with RCA Records in 1962. Though only one single charted on the U.S. pop charts the Top 100 "Soon I'll Wed My Love" in 1964 John Gary did reach the Top 20 with mid-'60s LPs such as The Nearness of You, Encore, and A Little Bit of Heaven, and fared even better on the easy listening charts (with albums including the number one Cold) and Cash Box, where Gary albums hit the Top Ten twice. He also covered a wide repertoire for the time, from show tunes to country hits and romantic ballads though, remarkably, very few of the novelty pop songs which dragged down fellow vocalists.

Of all the Norwegian black metal bands, Immortal has, arguably, stuck the closest to the mystical, occult-inspired vision of the scene: the bandmembers kept the evil-Kiss makeup throughout the band's existence, rarely experimented outside of the traditional guitars-drums-bass instrumental configuration, and never revealed their real names.
