STUNNING 1983 BROADCAST PERFORMANCE Judas Priest recorded their major-label debut in January 1977 at The Who's Ramport Studios, with Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover as producer. The album featured significant developments in heavy metal technique, in particular its use of double-kick drumming on tracks such as Dissident Aggressor , and includes a pop-metal cover of Diamonds & Rust by folk singer Joan Baez. Sin After Sin appeared in April 1977 on CBS, and was the first of eleven consecutive albums to be certified Gold or higher by the RIAA. Priest then recorded 1978's Stained Class, produced by Dennis MacKay, and Killing Machine (released in America as Hell Bent for Leather).

Today Heinrich Schütz (1585–1672) is considered the most important and influential German composer of the early baroque era. Even during his lifetime he was accorded the greatest esteem: Wolfgang Kaspar Printz, in a history of music published in 1690, reported that by roughly 1650 Schütz was “held to be the very best of German composers”.

There’s much to admire in Randall Goosby’s debut concerto recording. This star pupil of Itzhak Perlman possesses a beautifully warm and tender sound, as well as delivering technically immaculate playing that easily surmounts the most challenging daredevil passagework in the two Florence Price concertos.

Fifteen albums in, and 31 years after Annihilator began, you can hardly blame band supremo Jeff Waters for craving a little variety.
After a couple of thrash-dominated releases, then, Suicide Society often turns its attention to more traditional songwriting. This approach is most successful on the opening title track, which marries a simplistic riff with one of Annihilator’s most memorable choruses for some time, and the tunefully maudlin Snap with its stomping riff.
Hardcore fans shouldn’t fret; there’s still plenty of Waters’ trademark erratic riffage and thrashier tracks like Creepin’ Again, Break, Enter and My Revenge, even though the latter’s verses sound crazily like Metallica’s Damage Inc. Besides, melodic refrains are hardly new to Annihilator, as fans of the first two albums will attest…

The Les Humphries Singers was a 1970s musical group formed in Hamburg, Germany in 1969 by the English born Les Humphries, who had been inspired to do his own version of the Edwin Hawkins Singers. The group consisted of a large number of singers of diverse ethnic origin, some of whom such as John Lawton also performed with other groups. Another member was Jürgen Drews, who later started a long-running solo career, starting with his 1976 hit in Germany, "Ein Bett im Kornfeld", a cover version of "Let Your Love Flow" by the Bellamy Brothers.

Player epitomized what mainstream soft pop/rock was all about in the late '70s – and that was the sound of Los Angeles. The band's self-titled debut followed through on the promise of their debut hit single, "Baby Come Back," particularly on "This Time I'm in It for Love," but also with its abundant offering of mellow keyboards, layered harmonies, and spacious production. This was laid-back but engaging, and the band displayed some serious musical chops, occasionally sounding like a sweet, streamlined Steely Dan. Some of the same characteristics were evident on their next record, Danger Zone, but as that title illustrates, this was a tougher affair. From the beginning, heavy guitars are pushed to the forefront, and this is no mistake – Player is playing harder this time around, adding a little bit of metal and a little bit of prog to their basic sound.

Beethoven’s string quartets were written in an era when chamber music was shifting from the salons of the nobility into the concert hall, and when chamber music ensembles were slowly but surely metamorphosing from being a pursuit for a mix of outstanding amateurs and professionals into a discipline for professionally trained musicians. In that sense the “Rasumowsky” quartets represent a turning point in the string quartet tradition. Count Rasumowsky, one of Beethoven’s principal patrons in the first decade of the nineteenth century and the Russian ambassador in Vienna, was also an excellent amateur violinist, playing second violin in the string quartet which he financed and which was led by the renowned Ignaz Schuppanzigh. The three quartets, Opus 59, which were dedicated to him, prompted him to give up his place in the quartet. He provided the members of this quartet with a fixed appointment in 1808, which even included a pension for life. Initially, the three Opus 59 quartets met with some resistance from the Viennese audiences. After the two opus numbers 18 and 59, both consisting of a group of quartets, opus 74 is a single work, generally considered as one of the most readily accessible.

The success of Weekend in L.A. no doubt prompted producer Tommy LiPuma and Warner Bros. to give George Benson another double album (now on one CD) - and this, like its three Warner predecessors, also went Top Ten. It is also, alas, slicker, more romantic in mood, and more bound by perceptions of formula than the others, fussed over in three different studios in earnest search of another hit single (the dance-tempo cover of L.T.D.'s "Love Ballad"). Most of the touring band, including Ronnie Foster, Ralph MacDonald and Phil Upchurch, is back, and Claus Ogerman's soft symphonic touch provides most of the backdrops, with Mike Mainieri supplying the orchestra on three tracks…

A live double album from the groups tours undertaken between 1975 and 1977 that wasn't released until 1986, this spectacular concert album features this premier Italian prog band performing at their very peak to an enthusiastic audience in, amongst other places, Milan, Parma and Bologna. Those familiar with the group will, at a glance, see a series of classic Le Orme tracks filling the set-list, whilst brief, and welcome interpretations of Jethro Tull and Led Zeppelin tracks also feature. The sound is raw but powerful, and despite the occasional sonic glitch this highly-anticipated release - which, originally was only available in either Japan or Italy - still stands up as a fine double-album that should be well-and-truly lapped up by both fans of the group and Italian progressive rock aficianado's…
