Blue Bob, the self-titled debut from director David Lynch and collaborator John Neff's musical project, delivers a moody, edgy, rock-based sound that is similar to the work the duo introduced on the soundtrack to Lynch's brilliant film Mulholland Drive, and is also akin to Thought Gang, the group Lynch formed with composer Angelo Badalamenti for the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me soundtrack. Not surprisingly, Blue Bob mixes atmospheric, vaguely noir-ish soundscapes with blankly surreal lyrics, creating the musical equivalent of one of Lynch's movies. While he's an inspired director and often a talented musician – the songs he wrote for Julee Cruise's work on the soundtracks for Blue Velvet and the Twin Peaks TV series and movie, and her own album Floating into the Night, are unsurpassed in their twisted dreaminess – Blue Bob isn't as consistently successful as some of his other musical endeavors. Most of the pieces here aren't quite as evocative as Lynch and Neff's soundtrack work,

L’Rain’s I Killed Your Dog takes the universal pop theme of love as its starting point and inspects it through the form of a conversation — bold, bratty and even a touch diabolical – with her younger self. In the process of over-writing themes of grief and identity that informed her previous work, I Killed Your Dog considers what it means to hurt the people you love the most, and untangles her relationship with femininity and the formal musical conventions that others have placed on her.

Two of TV's most legendary crime series, 'The Untouchables' and 'The Naked City,' both inspired unusual concept albums to help promote their popularity and both are combined on CD for the first time in this new Jasmine Records release–and in their rare stereo versions. For 'The Naked City,' composer George Duning and lyricist Ned Washington came up with a story idea set to original songs, similar to Gordon Jenkins' 'Manhattan Tower' and Judy Garland's 'The Letter,' performed here by James Darren and Jo Ann Greer as two young lovers who meet in New York City. John McIntire narrates the story, with music conducted by Morris Stoloff.

The famous Russian director Sergei Eisenstein held Prokofiev the film composer in the highest regard, and to couple their two celebrated collaborations, Ivan the Terrible and Alexander Nevsky, in a two-disc set is therefore entirely appropriate. Ivan the Terrible, however, is a problematic score. Assembled by Abram Stassevich after the composer’s death, the oratorio lacks the large-scale balances and tensions of Prokofiev’s own Nevsky cantata, relying on narration to hold the structure together. This substantial English version by Michael Lankester, intended to ‘compensate for the lack of visual image’, is well projected by Christopher Plummer. Rostropovich directs a vivid performance of Alexander Nevsky, and only the rich tone of Russian voices is lacking. The LSO plays brilliantly, while the recording does full justice to one of Prokofiev’s finest scores.

Johann Baptist Vanhal was a Viennese contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, admired by both, and regarded as their peer in his own time. Yet the rediscovery of the wider picture of composition in the late 18th century has largely bypassed him. His symphonies of the 1770s are fine examples of the Sturm und Drang trend and were in several respects stylistically out in front of Haydn's and Mozart's contributions to the genre. The same can't be said of the three works here, published in 1784 and claimed to be piano quintets.

Maximilian Steinberg studied at the St Petersburg Conservatory from 1901 – simultaneously with studying natural sciences at the city’s university. At the conservatory, where he was a contemporary of Stravinsky, initially a friend, Steinberg’s teachers included Glazunov – the dedicatee of his First Symphony – and Rimsky-Korsakov. The latter took a shine to Steinberg, recognising him as a significant talent and took opportunities to further his career, to the chagrin of Stravinsky. In due course, Steinberg married Rimsky’s daughter. He remained in St Petersburg (later Leningrad) for the rest of his life, becoming director of the conservatory in 1934. Among his pupils at the conservatory was Shostakovich.

With a track listing avoiding songs which already had an outing on Unleashed In the East, this double live album from the Turbo tour showcases how Priest were able to work their material into a cohesive setlist, despite the studio albums the songs come from having very divergent sounds - Turbo and Point of Entry don't sound much like British Steel, for instance, and Screaming For Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith sound different from those other three, but the renditions here manage to make everything sit together naturally, revealing that perhaps it was more the production approach on those albums than anything inherent to the songwriting which was responsible for the apparent divergenve…

The Doobie Brothers’ illustrious career is marked by a string of hits, two of which, “Sweet Maxine” and “Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me),” are included here. But Stampede offers much more. In terms of musical dexterity, the 1975 set stands as the group’s peak studio moment.
With ex-Steely Dan guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter finally a full-time member of the band, the California quintet steps up everything from the arrangements to the songwriting. The group also invited several distinguished guests along for the ride: Vocalist Maria Muldaur, soul legend Curtis Mayfield, slide guitarist Ry Cooder, and jazz hand Victor Feldman among them. The results are as good on record as they appear on paper…

This provided fresh looks at 11 Collins classics, among them such epic numbers as "Don't Lose Your Cool," "Frosty," "Honey Hush" and "Tired Man." There were slow, wailing ballads with blistering solos, electrifying uptempo wailers with a great horn section answering Collins' phrases with their own bleats, and first-rate mastering and production. Guest stars included B.B. King, Branford Marsalis, Kim Wilson and Gary Moore, while Collins injected vitality into numbers he'd already made standards years ago. This set is a wonderful tribute to an incredible guitarist and musician.

Markus Stenz and the Gürzenich Orchestra Köln have demonstrated a special aptitude for performing large scale post-Romantic works, notably the symphonies of Gustav Mahler, which they recorded for Oehms Classics as a series of hybrid SACDs. They have followed that impressive cycle with what is probably the most Mahlerian work Arnold Schoenberg ever composed, the massive Gurrelieder for solo voices, multiple choruses, and large orchestra. This 2015 Hyperion release is impressive in its crisp details, vibrant tone colors, and startling clarity, all of which are evident in the opening instrumental passages in the Prelude, and which continue through the nearly operatic vocal parts, which have remarkable presence in the face of an orchestra that exceeds Wagnerian proportions. The recording is presented on two CDs that offer extraordinary sound for digital stereo, and the only disappointment is that this wasn't released as a multichannel recording. Listeners who find Schoenberg's modernist music difficult may be more receptive to this cantata, which is his most openly Romantic score and strongly reminiscent of Wagner's music dramas. Highly recommended.
