Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio will release his debut solo acoustic album, Mercy, this Friday, March 11. The nine songs on the album were written over the past two years and informed by Anastasio’s time spent in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Widowspeak’s sixth album started out with loose strings of a concept, a story about a fictional band: A chain-stitcher working in the satin district of an unnamed city, a neighborhood of storefront tailors devoted to elaborate costumery for country-western, art rock, ye-ye cover bands that populate the street’s bars after dark.

Classic Objects is a map of places; past places, like the old empty Melbourne pubs Hval’s band used to play in, public places Hval missed throughout lockdown, imagined, future places, and impossible places where dreams, hallucinations, death and art can take you. It is interested in combining heavenly things and plain things.

In December 1966 Joe Whiting would go on to team with Auburn native the legendary Mark Doyle to form the "New Ridgewoods" and after adding drummer Tom Glaister, bassist Barry Maturevity (a Ridgewood) and rhythm guitarist Chuck Baron plus changed their name to "Free Will". In the summer of 1967, Baron was replaced by John Dean and Bill Irwin added. In the spring of 1967 bassist Maturevitz was replaced by George Egosarian.

L'enregistrement présenté ici, dont le programme permet de découvrir ou redécouvrir des pages plus ou moins méconnues, n'a rien d'une commande opportuniste, soucieuse de s'inscrire dans un mouvement à la mode, en l'occurrence la promotion militante de la création féminine. Certes, la noblesse d'une telle cause n'a pas échappée aux deux interprètes, Clara Danchin et Anna Jbanova, mais, plus généralement, la ferveur de leur jeu impose surtout l'idée qu'il convient de rendre justice à des oeuvres qu'on ne saurait reléguer au rang de curiosités. La fonction muséale de l'enregistrement joue son rôle, mais dans une perspective qui vise clairement à encourager des exécutions en concert. Il est certaines partitions, en effet, qui furent victimes des vents contraires du destin, et la Sonate de Marguerite Canal, par exemple, ne saurait mieux illustrer notre propos. On le sait, elle avait enthousiasmé le grand Enesco qui, frappé par la mort, ne put réaliser son projet de la donner en public.

Le Testament de la Tante Caroline ("Aunt Caroline’s Will") remains one of Roussel’s least-known works. It’s an energetic and imaginative operetta that sits perfectly in the lineage of French musical comedy, with a plot that concerns the conditions attached to the mischievous aunt’s will. The text is inimitably Parisian and Roussel responded with graceful and elegant writing that for some contemporary critics evoked the music of one his orchestral masterpieces, Le Festin de l’araignée. The operetta is heard here in the revision requested by Roussel’s widow which cuts three acts down to one.
