Following their critically acclaimed album of English Music for Strings, Sinfonia of London and John Wilson turn to Germany and three outstanding works for string orchestra. Franz Schreker’s Intermezzo, the oldest piece here, was composed in 1900, before Schreker’s rise to fame in the opera houses of Germany and Austria, but shows strong indications of what was to follow. Korngold composed the Symphonische Serenade following his return to Vienna from Hollywood after the Second World War, and shortly before he wrote his Symphony in F sharp.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra and its artistic director Malin Broman have released their first joint album. Stockholm Diary includes Arnold Schönberg's cult work Verklärte Nacht as well as premiere recording of Esa-Pekka Salonen's 'Stockholm Diary'. The Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra is conducted by Malin Broman, a Swedish violinist who is also the violin and viola soloist on the album. The unifying factor in the album is not only Schönberg's work Verklärte Nacht, but also the city of Los Angeles. 'The composers of the album, Schönberg, Salonen and Stravinsky, have all been in Los Angeles at some point, so the name of the album could just as well have been LA Diary,' laughs Malin Broman.

Described by BBC Music Magazine as ‘Mozart music-making of altogether superior quality’, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet’s acclaimed Mozart Concertos series reaches Vol. 6. Along with Concerto No. 24, K. 491, the two concertos presented here were composed in Vienna in the winter of 1785 – 86, at a time when Mozart was working on Le nozze di Figaro. He was at the height of his fame as composer, virtuoso pianist, and teacher.

Ballades and Impromptus. Among the most suggestive of the titles Chopin bestowed on his works, they announce the poetic charge of two very different and contrasting genres. Where the Ballades are expansive and dense, with their dramatic power rooted in epic and legend and their bright or sombre hues, the Impromptus are light and concise, elusive and ephemeral, airy, fragile and volatile in texture, and with delicate touches of colour that spread joy, effervescent or serene, on the fleet wings of their melodies. These two aspects are but one at heart, though, in their essential romanticism, their lyricism and their roots in the fertile soil of improvisation, inseparable from the powerful inspiration that brought them into being.

A solo concert from Keith Jarrett - recorded at Munich’s Philharmonie on July 16, 2016, on the last night of a European tour - finds the great improvising pianist at a peak of invention. Creating a spontaneous suite of forms in the moment with the assurance of a master builder – interspersing touches of the blues and folksong lyricism between pieces of polyrhythmic and harmonic complexity - he delivers one of his very finest performances.

An interplay of ambient jazz, which remains a vital cornerstone of their approach, and new influences (Terry Riley, Emeralds, Editions Mego, Kranks, Stars Of The Lid, Fripp/Eno, Canterbury) fuel the creation of a sound which is mature, protean and at peace with itself. Hypnotic, dark and forcefully bone-dry drones, elegant loops, minimal sound layers and free-form riffs clash with radically structured passages, heavy soundscapes and driving percussions, creating jagged panoramas of sound while orchestrating all disparate parts together to form a pyrothechnic melange.

"I myself describe the music of my trio as "Cinematic Jazz". The latter is the impetus for spontaneous creativity, rhythmic innovation and energetic interaction between the musicians.

The legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) won his first praise on his interpretation of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto from the composer himself. Les sept vallées (The seven valleys) is written in seven parts for solo recorder, (soprano, alto,sopranino and tenor), inspired by The Conference of the Birds (Manteq ot-teyr), a poem by the Persian poet Farîd-ud-Dîn Attâr (env.1158 -1221).

The Russian-born Mischa Spoliansky (1898—1985) became one of the major names in cabaret in 1920s Berlin and then, as a refugee from Nazi Germany, in London, he became one of the best-known composers of film scores. He also wrote a handful of orchestral works, which have remained unknown until now. His Boogie is a witty, tongue-in-cheek piece of orchestral jazz, and the Overture to My Husband and I, one of his stage shows, has a Mozartian sparkle and wit.
